The Asterix book translators did a great job with this type of thing, especially with all the jokes and puns. Can't have been easy.

I was translating a sentence from Japanese to English.
The sentence was "My daughters are twins" but because Japanese doesn't have singular, it could also mean "my daughter is a twin" which doesn't make much sense.
I tried deepl and Google translate and both translated it as singular.

Thanks for making a video on this topic. It's really neat that the AppleTV+ original shows usually have both a normal subtitle track and a separate closed caption subtitle track (where the subs match the audio) for all the dubbed languages. It's one of the few platforms that take this extra step. Shame you couldn't provide multiple subtitle tracks for all your dubs.

Also worth mentioning, seems like Tom hired a Latin American Spanish translator, and the chosen translation for the roller coaster bit is very slang-specific and doesn't really make any sense in, for example, Spanish from Spain.

I can't think of anything that subtitly pisses me off more than the idea that it's "convenient" for me to have to rewind video and pause it with great timing in order to get the full measure of a conversation that's supposed to be taking place in real time.

On Crunchyroll for Gintama (anime that uses a lot of puns and referential humor) they included notes explaining a lot of the jokes. It dampens the humor a lot not understanding them but even then Gintama manages to be one of the funniest comedy anything ever made

This is just art at this point.

I mean the video, but also applies to the art of dubbing and subtitling. The Latinamerican team did an unbelievable good work; I can't believe both of them decided on "A huevo" without talking to each other. That's more 'mexican' than Latinoamerican, but definitely works and they HAD to make a local slang decision, there was no way around that.

Translator here, I worked with Tom on translations for a previous video. I also do voiceovers and translate subtitles. Both dubbing and subtitling is an art in itself, you have a lot of restrictions to consider in order to create a clean product.

If I were to translate the rollercoaster part subtitles from british, to american english, a kind of fun, interesting, and silly practice, I would have translated 'have it!' to 'Take That!"
Whether it could be dubbed that way, I think so, you held it long enough.
Lazy Town was a show that had interesting dubbing changes between british and american english if I recall.

Wish I spoke the other languages so that I could see how this video was subtitled and dubbed. Particularly the moments of "explaining the pun in English then how that can translate" and the point where Tom moves his mouth so that the enunciation is more difficult to match to his mouth. And seeing if the dub changed the "The Demolished Man" reference in the video but not later on in the video. Feels like he decided to give them a couple little challenges while he was bigging them up.

Hmm, 10-15 years ago, it was 2008-2013. Live pausing and rewinding was launched at least by Sky+ in 2001. Surely those who could afford it could very well pause and rewind, so satellite-only channels didn't need to have such a style guide, surely?
