Garmin Forerunner 970 vs Fenix 8 // Striking Similarities!

I use the flashlight on my Fenix 7 pro daily. I agree, didn’t know how much I needed it until I had it. Now I will never do a watch without it. This may actually get me to switch over to forerunner.

The thickness sold me. 970 is on the way! I'd like to use a screen protector but idk how realistic that will be with the curved edges of the screen on the 970. I also wish I could customize the body colors like on the Fenix 8 but black will be fine!

Looking to upgrade from an aging (42 mm) FR 245 music. I want a barometric altimeter for skiing but have been seduced by the ECG function. Looking at Fenix and Epix. 43 mm ends up too small for my wrist, so it is 47. Bright screens are engaging. Just bought a new laptop with a bright high res screen and love it every time I turn it on so it is going to be AMOLED. Battery life on all these is better than my FR 245 so no problem there. The weight is a big factor for me. I think I'd go for a watch the same size as my FR245 but more functions come with a bigger case. Still sitting on the fence but I can feel a FR 970 coming on. I’ve heard on other reviews that as well as Morning Report the Forerunner 970 has Evening Report. Does this seem useful? Do you think it will trickle up to the Fenix 8?

I have a FR965 - the screen is raised above the level of the bezel so touches any flat surface when laid on it. I can see the screen on the FR970 is curved like the 965 but is it still above the level of the bezel or now recessed like the Fenix?

Great overview and thanks so much for taking the time to put both sides by side. Currently not a Garmin owner, I'm considering the 970. But ... I don't like the strap. Could you point me towards the tool you used to remove it? I'm in the UK and can't find it on the Garmin website.

You mentioned it is possible to answer calls within bluetooth range, but is it also possible to respond to text messages through the watch by speaking into it?

I noticed that 970 has much more reflections on the screen? Fenix8 have a matte screen and 970 is glossy. Why is that?

Is the badge on the side of the 970 removable? Asking for a friend...

Does setting larger fonts also set larger fonts on the activity screens? Looks like the 970 has larger, more visible fonts in activity screens when you do comparison between the two

As a smaller wrist, petite trail runner, I loved the 45S (40mm) for its small size, but am now considering the Forerunner 970 vs the Fenix 8 (43 mm). Thank you for this informative comparison. I am learning towards the 970 for its thinner profile and lighter weight but REALLY wish it came in a 43 mm option.

I'm currently very inclined to get the forerunner 970. This said, one thing that completely blows my mind is how much they charge for nylon bands. Yes, they offer some 30 euros ones, but the premium being 300 euros?1 Absolutely insane.

Great video as usual Des! Is Garmin cannibalising their own line up of their watches? Their pricing strategy and sale on latest Fenix puzzles the consumers imo. Anyhow, take care Des, enjoy the summers 😉

As a runner i would have gone for the FR970 but because it’s only available in the 47mm I went for the fenix 8 43mm because of the smaller display and couldn’t me more pleased with it, it looks better imo and is still so light you hardly notice it on your wrist!

Can we maybe start to speak about the software quality that is going very fast down hill? That a 1k watch has a lagging interface? Maybe?

my thoughts... too expensive :) not enough features to upgrade my 965. Also, at this price point the open the door for apple watch to steal more customers (could be even more if they finally improve battery capacity and consumption)

Can you tell me if the 970 has induction buttons?

I am using the Fenix 8 now since December 24 and the state of the software was (and for a ggod part still is) surprisingly bad.
However I struggled with returning it because of that as I thought they will iron out the bugs in a short time which was not the case.
What about the 970? Does it crash when panning the map while running an activity? Does it has turn notifications or do you need to constantly check the watch to not get lost?

How accurate is Garmin V02Max compared to Apple Watch?

Virtually all the same features, but lighter, slightly thinner, long enough battery life, and maybe with a slightly better screen than the Fenix 8. Oof. I almost wanna sell my Fenix and get the 970…..

Apple Watch user here, looking to switch to Garmin. Does anyone have recommendations which watch would be best for someone that bikes and swims primarily? I have been looking at the Fenix 8, 970, and I believe the 570. Looking forward to the more niche tracking abilities of Garmin!!!
