How much knowledge of Civil War never mention our history books.
ОтветитьChamberlain's brilliant and gutsy leadership at Little Round Top saved the day for the Union Army.
ОтветитьThank you for posting this. I never knew this story. When we have some people who are itching to see another Civil War this story has a good lesson of the tragedy of this war and what it could be again.
ОтветитьA fallacy in the first minute. The first major engagement on Union soil was Antietam in September of 1862. It was the bloodiest single day of the war.
ОтветитьHeroic act but stupid. He should’ve stayed home with his family. The war was fought to create a huge federal government and to end the constitution. It is difficult to pray stupid people.
ОтветитьMY C.O, IN GERMANY WAS NAMED CHAMBERLAIN
ОтветитьThe bravery of the men on both sides was remarkable. The 15th Alabama started a 25 mile march to Gettysburg in the predawn hours of the 2d, reaching Little Round Top at about 4 p.m. and being thrown immediately into the assault on the hill. Exhausted by the march and without water, they still found the strength and courage to charge Union forces near the crest of the hill time and again before finally being driven back. The real heroes of the Union forces on Little Round Top that day, besides Chamberlain, were Gouvernor Warren, who saw the need for reinforcements on the extreme left of the Union line and 26-year-old Col. Strong Vincent, who took it upon himself to redirect several regiments, including the 20th Maine, to that location and paid the ultimate price for his leadership.
ОтветитьJoshua Chamberlain wasn’t just a brave and good soldier, he was honorable - he never mistreated his prisoners.
Chamberlain stayed true to his values even during the horrors of war.
I was impressed by the almost poetic writing of parts of this episode. Well done.
ОтветитьThis is an inspiring account of the actions of the 20th Maine on Little Round Top. However, here it sounds like the position of Company B was an accident. Other versions of the story suggest that Chamberlain positioned Company B on his left flank quite deliberately. That “swinging gate” maneuver was not an accident. As a professor of Romance languages, Chamberlain had read a lot of Roman history and he took that maneuver from Roman military tactics.
As others have said, positioning the 20th Maine on the extreme left of the Union Army that day was a key to victory in that bloody battle and Chamberlain’s leadership was essential.
Amazing he was the final casualty of the civil war decades later
ОтветитьThanks to the movie 'Gettysburg' , my x and her friends seemed to believe that Chamberlain was virtually alone on Little Round Top...hahaha.
ОтветитьGreat video, inspiring.
ОтветитьThat’s General Chamberlain
ОтветитьAll but 6 of the mutineers gave in. What happened to the 6?
ОтветитьMy dead and wounded were nearly as great as those still on duty They literally covered the ground The blood stood in puddles in some places on the rocks The ground was soaked with the blood of as brave men as ever fell on the red field of battle

Boy he suffered physically with his groin injuries after the war, and life was not easy for the veterans who disagreed with battle accounts.
ОтветитьChamberlain saved the Union
ОтветитьFirst major engagement on Union soil? Um ... Antietam, the year before!
Ответитьgood video! Small correction, surrender was on Palm Sunday a week before Easter based on what I've read. Lincoln died on Good Friday.
ОтветитьMeaningful, thank you
ОтветитьGees. I am brought to tears by men of greater valor than I have ever held myself.
ОтветитьI am sick and tired of how great Chamberlain was at Gettysberg and how he saved the union army, Hip, hip hurrah, Three cheers for Chamberlain, If it wasn't for his superior, Colonel Stong Vincent on his on intintiative move his brigade to undefended little round top and place his units there with Chamberlain on his far left, the confederate could have rolled up the union lines and won the battle as it was. During one of the confederates strong attacks, Vincent stood tall and yelled, "don't give an inch, not an inch", A bullet hit Vincent and he was carried away to die two days later, after receiving a promontion to brigadar gerneral. Nobody ever tells this story because Vincent died of his wounds and Chanberlain ived to tell his story over and over and overt again. I would like the hostory channel to tell the story of Colenel Stong Vincent and leave Canberlain out of it for once. If it wasn't for Vincent, there would not be a story for Chanberlain to tell!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ОтветитьYou never know. An unassuming academic executed a maneuver that quite literally saved the Union.
ОтветитьOne of my favorite generals of all time.
ОтветитьI am 72 years old and I have a hobby of reading about the Civil War. I watched the movie “Gettysburg” and saw what Chamberlain and his men did in that battle. I am a retired Marine Corps veteran and this was such an inspiring story. I served for 30 years.
I feel that all men and women who served in the military services were heroes in one sense or another.
I salute you all.🇺🇸👍✝️
The guy narrating, Charles Durning, was in just as harry battles in WW2 ...Dday then battle of the bulge .
ОтветитьThe town i grew up in lincoln country has a round top named after the battle
ОтветитьI had family with both the 2nd and 20th Maine, so.e were Cowan and some were Sproul
ОтветитьEvery Federal trooper in the Civil War was Antifa. And so was every US soldier who fought in WW2.
ОтветитьGREAT!!!
ОтветитьGettysburg was not the first major engagement on Northern Soil. Every land battle was on United States land. Antietam was also previous, a major engagement, and in a state that had not pretended to secession.
ОтветитьMy great grandfather served in Chamberlain's unit.
ОтветитьGreat documentary on General Chamberlain. Thank you ! Enjoyed it.
💯👍❤️
I went to Gettysburg with my son and he walked out in the field where Picket and his men charged and just stood there. Then we walked up Little Round Top. It's a strange feeling to stand where the 20th Maine stood and I you can feel the men and Chamberlain made that glorious stand against the Confederate soldiers. It's a great feeling. I'll will never forget that. I graduated from IU with a degree in history. That's something I will never forget and I am so grateful I got to do that.❤❤❤❤❤
ОтветитьI love history. This is so amazing the story of this distinguished General and all his brave men. A very rough point in American history. Family members and friends fighting each other depending on which side of the border you lived at the time. There is no romanticism in war. Our Civil War here in America was building up for years. It was inevitable. By God it settled and wiped out the scourge of slavery. It cost many many lives on the battlefield and a wonderful visionary of a president. May all those souls' be at forever peace and may we never suffer again such a war.
ОтветитьA true American hero
ОтветитьJoshua Chambetlain and Captain ack ack Haldane are two heroes from Bowdoin College . I visited the College a while ago from Virginia.
Ответить"I fought next to Chamberlain on little round top. At one point thrusting my sword between a Confederate's bullet and Colonel Chamberlain's head. He turned to give a look of thanks, knowing I had just saved his life"
- Joe Biden
Chamberlain saved the Gettysburg Campaign for the Union. He was the right person in the right place at the right time.
ОтветитьHey! Any black folks want to thank them?
ОтветитьI was just I just t
😮 back😂 from af
😂
With all due respect to Joshua Chamberlain, without the efforts of the 2nd US Sharpshooters who delayed the Confederate forces by 30 minutes, the 20th Maine would have been trying to retake Little Round Top instead of defending it. There was nobody there to defend it prior to 10 minutes before the attack.
ОтветитьA degree in rhetoric. What a concept, learn how to learn.
Ответитьunless I am Mistaken...this was narrated by Charles During....who himself won a silver star and a purple heart at Normandy. If I was JLC I would want someone of that caliber to tell my story!
ОтветитьChamberlain was the right man, in the right place. He paid a price for his service. The movie Gettysburg gave a good impression of the man. Jeff Daniel’s did a great job portraying Chamberlain.
ОтветитьThank you so very much for sharing this !
I had no idea Chamberlain had two children, Though I did know he was married.
I also had no idea that there was a third brother, ‘John Chamberlain’ .
Thank you again !
