It's simple if you take Nico's claims for immediate championship aspirations at face value. Seems he wanted a DPOY caliber player who could get you 20-25ppg and 10-15rpg, not an ok filler plus a million draft picks.

Embiid is always injured, plus he's a full time 5 who might not fit well with Lively and Gafford - maybe Nico wanted minimal roster turnover and was stuck on getting a DPOY type who could play the 4. Spurs are not letting Victor go. If the Mavs somehow assessed Giannis was untouchable (easily done via hypotheticals when making routine phone calls to fellow GMs) that only leaves the Lakers to negotiate with for AD.

JJJ doesn't rebound nearly enough for serious consideration, and maybe his inside game isn't up to par with the other guys mentioned. Does Mobley fit the criteria or is his offensive bag not versatile enough?
