Phenomenal video and research
ОтветитьI don't understand why these boats don't have heating elements along all of the rails and exterior areas.
ОтветитьI think I would have stayed with my dad too.
Ответить70 knot winds... Man that's crazy. I can't imagine that
ОтветитьThe tragedy really seems undeserved for the captain, his son and the three other crew. They had formidable routines in place, but were taken away so fast. They were very nearly all lost at sea, but the coast guard crew brought mercy to two.
ОтветитьThis one choked me up. Great job as always brick immortar.
ОтветитьSeems like a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time with those high winds and ocean spray making the boat ice up in a record time.
Seems like the turn he made did contribute to the sinking and knowledge of how much the wind was pushing them upright would have helped him to keep the vessel afloat long enough for them all to get out. Thinking the situation was still salvageable was his only real miscalculation. The conditions sank them but the move to turn into the wind is what did them in too quickly to all escape. I mean if we want to know how to avoid the same mistake and make this a teaching moment for the rest of the industry. That being said perhaps some tools could help. Like developing a vibrating cage that covers the pots to shed the ice along with a system to clear the chips off the deck with compressed air nozzles, so the crew can clear ice in extreme conditions. Some rope and handholds on the inside of the cabin would have aided in rescue. If it was me I would want a mini submarine mounted on each side of the boat with access hatch going into it from the inside of the boat. The sub would have a radio plus warmth, food and water and flares etc. the subs may double as float to keep a listing boat upright longer.
Thanks!
ОтветитьMovies and series don't make me cry, but this had me almost in tears, the feeling of anxiety and helplessness is a horrible one indeed.
ОтветитьUnfortunately the internet is full of people and their logical fallacies. These are often accompanied with little to no sympathy for the deceased and their true character. Something that the commenters are seriously lacking. They just make themselves look like unsympathetic idiots in the process.
ОтветитьThe captain should have did an alarm long before he did .
ОтветитьWas the boat recovered? Only 160 ft of water seems it could have been lifted.
ОтветитьIf it could happen to them, it could happen to anyone out there. What a nightmare. RIP
ОтветитьI work at the FAA Cold Bay Flight Service Station in Cold Bay, AK, on land where it's safe. The USCG bases an HH-60 helicopter at Cold Bay Airport. They frequently swap out crews from Kodiak, AK. The last air operators to cancel flights are Lake Clark Air, A.C.E., and the USCG, with the Coast Guard going in just about any weather possible to save people. They're always doing hoist lift training and practicing approaches and patrolling. The only job more dangerous than crab fishing is protecting the fleet and being ready on a moment's notice to rescue them. I have extreme respect for the Coast Guard and what they do.
ОтветитьWhy can’t ships use a de-icing fluid like airplanes?
ОтветитьWouldn't you instinctively turn the ship back to broadside to the wind direction once it started to roll?
ОтветитьThank you for doing such a thorough job with this story. Your story honors the men lost at sea, the men who survived, and it will save lives in the future. Well done.
ОтветитьI am not a fisherman, not American but in France we watch deep sea fishing and we are sorry for the loss of its great men and fishermen sincerely sorry
ОтветитьIncredibly well done
ОтветитьRIP Art Ganacias ,, Kentridge H.S class of 89.
ОтветитьThe Alaskan Coast Guard has to be the most badass group of prestige mode seal firefighters in the world. Some may have little idea how many lives they forever shaped through sheer expertise and good will.
ОтветитьI have to appreciate the U.S.C.G. especially for my father Paul Davidson Niggli served in and was a flight mechanic for the U.S.C.G.
ОтветитьI'm no engineer or anything but couldn't they invent some way to make ice removal easier? Like some sort of coating or maybe tear-off layer on common ice areas?
ОтветитьDidn't the search play over the radios in Deadliest Catch?
ОтветитьCoast Guard rescue swimmers are some real badass dudes and women ! Such bravery ! I'm terrified of the ocean in the day , I can only imagine how scary it is at night dropping in from a helicopter in pitch black. Ugh cold chills thinking about it. R.i.p to whoever lost their life that night !
ОтветитьTerrifying
ОтветитьThis was a well presented video. These crews face extreme challenges at sea and the ability to respond to at rapidly changing situations take training training and more, so you can calmly respond to what needs to be done. If the panic described in the video had not taken place those lost might have survived. I’m just a sport fisherman but I carry a hand held EPerb even when fishing on the beach here in Oregon. Our beaches a known for Sneeker Waves, especially in the winter and it’s easy to be fought buy them. We usually lose three or four people every year. Last week we almost lost a Grandmother and her 6 year old grand daughter, thanks to the fast response of someone walking on the beach near by the tragedy was avoided! The conditions in the North Pacific and the Arctic are dangerous, so take advantage of additional training so that when thing go wrong you can adapt accordingly.
ОтветитьNICELY PRESENTED MY MAN ! I ENJOYED WATCHING .
ОтветитьI only just now discovered this channel in my feed. With production, research, narration, & writing THIS superlative, it’s a crime he doesn’t have at least half a million subs. 😣
Buddy, you’re doing God’s work, as they say. I will absolutely hit your Patreon. These’re Nat Geo-caliber video essays! 👏👏👌🤟
I wish there were a way to put some heating system but I know that would add weight. RIP fellas.
ОтветитьGreat report. Thank you.
Ответитьi can only imagine the terror of an incident like this. i give a lot of credit to the brave coast guard members that went out in that weather, risking their own lives in the process. true unsung heros.
ОтветитьThe listing ship held up by the wind, goes to windward of shelter and capsizes. That’s really tough. Really tough.
ОтветитьI have so much respect for the Coast Guard, it's nearly suicide the conditions they rescue people in.
ОтветитьI find it amazing how many resources are being used by the coast guard to find potential survivors in situations like this… despite how dangerous the conditions are. It’s amazing and gives me hope for humanity. Might seem like I’m overstating it but it just dawned on me listening how many people/resources they dispatched to try and find a handful of people in such dangerous conditions. I’m grateful we have people like that in our society…. All sorts of first responders.
ОтветитьIve worked some of the toughest jobs known to man …even as we speak .
But I tell my wife …all of them pale in comparison to what these guys do …
With out even factoring in the hellish conditions they work in …
This presentation is well done ..,
I am almost overwhelmed with emotion posting these thoughts .
Grim .
Terror
Hog Slayer Status !
Honor and Respect to you all .
This leaves great sorrow to all that knew scandies rose, I was fortunate enough to have worked on the deck.
This news broke my heart.
I usually fish near Catalina Island once a week, the sport fishing is my favorite hobby. I won't go out on sea if the winds are 14MPH or higher. I respect the guys that work on the crab fishing and cod fishing boats for a living.
ОтветитьA trend I've noticed with these videos is always that when the captain or whoever calls and talks to someone, they "didn't sound concerned about the situation"
I'm autistic, and beyond that I don't really get frantic and am usually quite calm in pretty wild scenarios. I would tell you that the place was on fire just as casually that I would tell you that dinner is ready.
It really hurts to watch one of these videos where all the crew members preformed the best they could in the situation. It seems unfair.
ОтветитьIt breaks my fucking heart, Johnny survives that gives up boat work and wraps his motorcycle around a tree.. Life has a cruel sense of irony. We love you johnny you will be missed. And all the other boys above and below the water We'll meet again in valhalla!
ОтветитьGod bless the CG! Guys are some of the toughest MFs!
ОтветитьThe men and women who crab fish, lobster and crab fishing are members of a exclusive group. I'll admit there is no way I could do it. Y'all have my utmost respect and support. I'm allergic to anything that is caught in sea water or fresh water. But my wife and kids aren't. So thank you for what you do and my family along with millions of others appreciate and enjoy bounties of your hard work!
ОтветитьMy dad used to work fishing boats in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, gotta be some of the most unforgiving waters in the world.
ОтветитьIm not mariner but i do know this u can have the best crew best ship best plans best safety equipment when mother nature says ive had it there no forgiveness its sad but there is always something that can be learned
ОтветитьI don't use the term "act of God" loosely but that's what this felt like. Heartbreaking
ОтветитьOnly thing the captain was at fault for was hesitation to get ice off earlier
ОтветитьThe only thing, of course 20/20 vision from watching this great and well done video showing the unfolding events, is David Leigh Cobban and co captain could have possible not turned so sharply an angle to change the wind assisting the boats precarious upright position in order to slowly approach the island much sooner. But it is obvious that he did not know what we now know that the wind was aiding his boat. That said, I really should shut my 2 cents opinion down. Jim Rodgers
ОтветитьThis is a brutal account of most likely very good men faced with a sudden problem and not enough time. Very difficult to get through.
