As a historian and lover of horror, I always find it fun when literary tropes travel back and forth in "discovered" diaries and the like! Cold down the spine, hairs rising on one's head, all the reporting on the neurological bodily effects of fear, was a fashion invented in the 1860s with Blackwood et al - a means of getting the reader to "feel" the terror. The idea of a report from the 1500s, or the like, detailing such things, is just a pleasant reminder of the pervasive and fundamental tropes of the genre.
