Cold down the spine, hairs rising on one's head, all the reporting on the neurological bodily effects of fear, was a fashion invented in the 1860s with Blackwood et al - a means of getting the reader to "feel" the terror. The idea of a report from the 1500s, or the like, detailing such things, is just a pleasant reminder of the pervasive and fundamental tropes of the genre.
