i'm a new player (got the game at christmas and became obsessed) so i had my first encounter with a derelict freighter recently.

it was that moment when i realized NMS was a horror game in disguise.

A little late to the party, but as a practiced Larval Egg collector, I have on two occasions lost in permadeath (my first two, actually) to what can only be described as a one-two-three punch. I was not fast enough or unlucky enough to dodge INTO the blow, in reacting to the first hit, stunning me, and the next two bites connected, ending my early attempts at collection. Never on Perma without at least a couple extra pips of health to be sure.

The second, not related, was to ram full speed in a Pilgrim into dissonance drillers at full health only to find this instakills. Incidentally, Pilgrim tyres are deadly to the little horrors.

Lol I didn't know the Jellies were horrors. I saw them once in the ocean and I was just like "awwww. Pretty can I scan them? No? Okay....bye jellies!"

The planets that are filled with those giant mechanical globe heads has the creepiest bgm. I often glance around while mining half expecting one of them to turn and thunder roll at me for looting their resources. If they ever patched that in without warning I would probably throw my controller in terror lol.

In my 50-ish hours in NMS the deadliest enemy for me was my exocraft's gun! Insta suicide in 1 bad shot and like no damage to actual enemies. Even My pistol is better at shooting enemies! The only reason I died in this game at all...

And here I thought NMS was purely a relaxing game, at least until I was attacked by a giant rock crab. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Intense I tell you.

The first time I encountered the Screaming Abyssal Horror I literally screamed out loud. I'm audio sensitive and was wearing headphones, I've never once been scared like that in a video game before. They still terrify me lol.

I was doing a hardcore permadeath run just yesterday, was doing a mission involving feeding creatures on a planet when i had apparently hit a large herbivore when melee boosting, one of its friends was nearby and swiftly attacked, my sheild popped and i was at 1 health left with just one attack. That was the most i ever panicked. It's not even the predators you have to worry about because they let you know they're hostile, the real ones you gotta watch out for is pissing off the herbivores that will fight back.

being new i havnt seen most of these on list, butr for me most scary was a number 1 encounter. just a random wild predator. What made it scary was 2 factrors, 1 there was like 20 or 30 of em around me, and 2 they were teeny tiny little dino looking things, and i mean they were tiny, size of small rocks, and with tall grass everywhere it was almost impossible to fight em i had to run.

I have some sort of asrrophobia 😅can't play games where you have to dive deep into the ocean. Anyway, a friend of mine told me that you can only play no man's sky on VR. I never watched any gameplay videos nor that it's not only vr. I just blindly ran straight into it with VR. Damn

i swear the only reason people struggle with combat in this game is because you're all using controllers 😅using a neutron with a couple upgrades easily one or two shots most enemies and using a keyboard and mouse with a bit of melee-boosting experience makes even level 5 sentinel encounters on high activity planets a cakewalk. Derelicts were scary the first time because i was actually expecting a challenge with the atmosphere it set, but after doing the whole thing and finding nothing but a few docile jellyfish, all tension was completely dispersed from then on. and i didn't even know the underwater abyssal horrors *had* an attack until i played on a save with pathetic damage and couldn't just kill them with one boltcaster burst

Used to be terrified of Abyssal Horrors. But I assembled a seriously jacked-up Pulse Spitter on one of my Multitools, for Derelict Freighter missions. I found that it also works beautifully for hosing down AHs at range. Now, I hunt them. :)

everything else aside, gotta agree with you on monkeys. Damn things are terrifying. Especially chimpanzees, which are known for attacking mercilessly and causing grievous, disfiguring injuries. Can't think of many animals I wouldn't rather run into, even apex predators like wolves would be more trustworthy than a chimp.

It'd be cool to see some Lovecraftian figures and encounters in No Man's Sky. Imagine a narrative or mission where you eventually discover that what you encountered is completely out of your control, and only reveals how small you are compared to the universe around you.

I remember the first time I got jumpscared by that stupid angler fish.
Not only did I not know about the existence of these things (even tho I'm cautious underwater in games because of my thalassophobia), it also happened inside an underwater cave with not much space around. So you can imagine my panic when seeing something huge with a mouth full of teeth swimming at me while making that sound inside a tight space lmao
