I'd have let Craster go - selfish egoist! She wasn't his property - she was just doing what she loved. Old Lermotov would have been a better husband - she'd have taken him down from that pedestal enough to humanise him with her wit.

Thank you for the upload! This movie is so beautiful. If aliens came from another galaxy and asked us for a reason not to exterminate humanity, I would show them this movie! If it doesn't work, at least I got to watch this masterpiece one last time before I go 😂

Thank you so much for posting this! I am 47 years old and first saw this with my Grandmother (who raised me from the time I was two years old) at 14 years of age. I will never forget that afternoon.

I lost her to stomach cancer (I miss you Grandma!) almost four years ago and found out last week that I have lymphatic cancer.

Hopefully, I will still be here when my (now 19 year old son who I raised alone after my husband left 12 years ago) as of yet, future (if he doesn't want to be in BIG trouble, it will be at least 7-8 years in the future...) teenaged granddaughter is 14 and we can watch this together as well.

I hate how some people think that Julian was a terrible husband, saying that he was trying to force her to give up her career when in actuality that wasn’t true at all. During the argument scene, he literally says.

“You can dance anywhere else in the whole world!”

This proves that Julian never wanted Vicki to give up her dreams, and truly loved her. He just didn’t want her to dance for Boris because he knew how unreasonable and controlling the man was. I think Julian is just as sympathetic as Vicki was because all he wanted was to be by her side as she lived her dreams.

In real life Julian would become a well-respected, yet uncommercial composer and Vicky would end up dancing far longer than she would have otherwise in order to support him

The best movie about ballet that's ever been produced imo. It's a masterpiece. It's one of the few ballet movies if not the only ballet movie where you see an ENTIRE ballet production uninterrupted. It was one of the grandest moments when I saw this in the movie theatre. You buy one ticket and you see a movie AND a ballet at the same time.

A wonderful creative work that barely dates. Full credit should go to the many people who contributed to the digital restoration and re-mastering of this film masterpiece. The colour grade alone is extraordinary: it is more jewel like than the original technicolor print.

Thus, the Women's Movement of the 1970's, telling women they don't need a man.
Strange, now the lead role would be a man, claiming to be a trans-woman.
All the female parts would be recast with trans-men, so they wouldn't need a woman.
Stunning dance sequences, very gifted woman.

This is an absolutely gorgeous film and it still holds up so well today. The colours, the actors, the dancing and pretty much everything is perfect. The only thing I just can't stand is the ending! (Spoilers for the ending below)

I don't understand why Julian and Lermontov are both so awful / moronic to Vicky at the end. Why can't Vicky do both? I don't understand why Lermontov has this dumb rule that Vicky can never be in a romantic relationship as a dancer. It's so stupid and illogical. And then I don't understand why Julian doesn't let Vicky dance and perform the Red Shoes at the end. His ultimatum was honestly unfair. Julian could have taken up composing gigs closer to Paris or wherever she's performing after his opera run was done. Vicky absolutely should have been able to pursue both love and dancing.
