25 years, it’s very physical, and a lot of math. Good pay for a blue collar job. You will not start out at $35 per hr. But with lots of on job with a good trainer not some ass hole that is afraid you will take his job. That kind of person you will find out that although you think they are smart, they are limited you can and will become a lot smarter. He is 100% Right lots of study and practice. I made a better than average.

95 percent of customers have no idea what we do. Some think we do this for fun, and we are all knuckle dragging wrench turners. The rude comments and snide comments make the job that much harder.

As an HVACR Technician, it's up to you if you want to be the best. Ive been doing this for 11 years and I love learning anything I can. I would go to work and then come home and read online about something I wanted to learn more about. Simple things too, like defrost time clocks, or solenoid valves, or superheat, subcooling, TXV's, compressors, steam boilers, pumps, couplers, I could name so much more, literally anything and everything. It was a lot of work but it's because of my desire to learn as much as possible after I get home from work that I became so successful as a technician. I always tell the young guys. You're day doesn't end when you get home. You need to read at least one thing after work. Learn one new thing everyday after work and you will accelerate your growth as a technician X2. I was told by my boss that I learned in 10 years what most guys learn in 20. Only because I worked so hard and cared so much and have the mentality of "I HAVE to know." I HAVE to otherwise I can't sleep at night. It's a blessing and a curse. Just work hard every day, pay attention to what you're doing and what you're learning, and go home and learn some more. Keep learning every single day and never ever stop.

Just look around and try to choose my trade by now. Looks hvac is one of the most knowledge-intensive trades with high demand in math n abstract brainwork over muscular operation, and it's not manufacturing work in factory, means less likely to be replaced by AI robots in future. Seems like a good choice.

I thought I was prepared after leaving school but I’m learning very quickly how unprepared I am and how much I don’t know. I’m sticking it out and I want to be good at this trade. I pray I do. I love the trade but like I said before it’s definitely a lot harder than I realized.

I got the manual labor part of the job licked. I’m a laborer by trade, been in the field for 10 years, industrial and commercial. Manual labor is my bread and butter. The hard part is going to be the head work; Ain’t like I don’t have to use my noggin a ton as it is, but HVAC is on another level altogether. That’s what spooks me the most. I can deal with difficult customers and cranky old foremen no problem 🙃
Your willingness to share your knowledge is a big help! Probably won’t remember half of it and definitely gonna make my share of mistakes too, but I’d rather try to learn from others as much as I can. At least it’ll give me pause and help me think things through..
Something tells me that we’re on the cusp of a golden age in this trade, and the trades in general..

As a HVAC technician, with roughly 6 years experience,, it can be a really good and gratifying trade to learn, but it absolutely is and always will be a really tough and at times a frustrating job. On top of trying to learn everything that you possibly can about the trade, you also have to be a little bit of a plumber at times, you have to be a little bit of an electrician at times. On top of that, there are the working conditions you have to deal with. I have always worked in residential right outside New York City in Westchester county and in the summertime you're doing a lot of air handler )condenser swap out and sometimes furnace and coil and condenser swap outs. Probably about 85% of those jobs are in the Attic on a 95° day in the New York City area the attic has to be about 120 maybe 125 and you're up there for 8, 9, 10, sometimes 12 hours. It's brutally hot up there. I could go on for hours about this but to keep it short like I said it can be a great trade I've raised my kids on it and taking care of my family on it and I try to be the best I can be every day and learn the most I can learn so I can make the most money I can possibly be paid

Been watching you for a while, never saw this one. What you’re saying is true, for sure. Everything from residential to industrial has the potential to throw you through some real ringers! But, it’s just a matter of stickin’ it out, in my humble opinion. I started out as a tin knocker for mainly commercial HVAC systems. I burnt out due to politics and because I was young and stupid. Eventually I got into restaurant and then market refrigeration… I almost quit the trade completely due to that experience! But then I was blessed by getting a job as an in house ammonia refrigeration operator, which eventually led me out into the field as an ammonia refer tech. I don’t believe in coincidences. For whatever reason, I made a choice to stick it out. And I have a lot of people to thank for getting me where I am today. Two pieces of advice I have for people interested in HVAC/R… If you go to school for it, stay humble when you get out into the real world. It’s GOING to kick your ass! But, next… Stick it out. It pays to learn. You’ll end up making some good money. But be prepared for long shifts on call schedules. The other thing is, don’t settle for crap companies with crap employees. Find a good company with good moral code and respect for themselves, their peers, and clients. One thing missing from many of the companies in my trade, is culture. You want to be somewhere that will mentor you and lift you up, so long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort. They’re out there! Just gotta have standard when you go looking. Good post, man 🤙

Hvac is hard
By working other jobs is what helped me get to stay long in hvac

Roofer thought me to work 14hr days wear out my body to make it day by day

Landscaping thought me no matter where you start at stick to your right side youll always circle back to the same spot you started meaning if your doing hvac on a housr and have to fix certain things start on the right nearest corner circle around the house and youll be back where you started with everything being done that way your not zig zagging and being all over the place and not being efficient

I worked on cars before going hvac-r and let me tell you what gets me by,
Working on cars you get greasy gotta use alot of strength pulling pushing and working in tight spots but whats the worse of all is when you break a rusty bolt or stud and u need to get out somehow
Therefore
Working in hvac-r i started of rough new construction and let me say its alot of hot temps itchy fiberglass duct work alot of metal cutting cut fingers and hands, working underneath a house to just get paid 100 bucks for per day wearing a hot white suit with a mask breathing in 100 year old materials
