Last year, in April 2022, I saw the F-14 from the air control tower buzzing scene in the first Top Gun movie. She is on the flight deck of the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, Texas.

I saw one of these up close at an airshow back in the 90's. The pilot was answering questions from the crowd when he stated that there was only one aircraft in the entire world that was superior, but he was not at liberty to divulge. Then I just said "F-15" and he just gave a little smile. The two best air supremacy fighters in the world and we had them both.

Six facts wrong right off the bat: The GEF110s offered the Tomcat 56,000 lb total thrust in afterburner. A clean-configured Tomcat could approach Mach 2.3, though a Tomcat with a substantial weapons loadout could not do this. The Tomcat carried only one gun, not two. Grumman did not choose the TF-30. It was forced on the company because the F-101 engine originally planned was not ready. While a reliable and fuel efficient engine for the F-111 strike role, its propensity for compressor stalls led to crashes. Pratt and Whitney tried to improve the engines over time and was only partially successful. There was no F-14C. The Phoenix missile was guided to an interception point by the F-14's AWG-9 system (command guidance), and only began active homing at about 10 miles. The Phoenix did not guide itself to the target from 50 miles away. That only four targets were shot down was due to two of the target drones dropping out of the sky early.

The first 4 minutes alone have so many glaring factual errors that I can’t actually recommend listening. You’ll learn more by just turning off the sound and watching the video.

It had to of really hurt anybody to be involved in decommissioning this graceful beast. Especially the mediocre ugly thing that we call the Hornet. Maybe that is more capable and lower maintenance cost? I sure hope so.

She was to become the Best Air superiority Plane in the World. Tried and true. I worked with the Tomcat on Two carriers and for a carrier based plane, no more routine wear and tear issue than that of any other carrier based planes we had, and for the hours the planes and pilots needed to fly. Funny how the soviets like the plane so much they copied us. The trouble issues (with any machine) DID NOT outweigh the overall best performance of the aircraft in its service life. But what is so aggravating and ironic is that when washington talks about costs, 'oh it costs so much to maintain a tomcat'... that did not bother them at all, with the Price tag of the F35..... its not about cost at all! its all about 'under the table' deals and politics and follow the (other money) $$$$$.

The Tomcat was a rock star, when the air wing came aboard the boat, nobody really cared or paid much attention...when the Tommies came aboard, you couldn't find a spot on the observation deck or crows nest, everyone wanted to watch the big Cats come aboard! Stunning, beautiful and deadly. Every enemy respected and feared flying against this legendary bird.
