I own both.
We use both.
Honestly, when it is served in a platter, there's no big difference.

If you live alone, and want to cook rice in the morning to be consumed until dinner, the "smart" ricecooker has some advantages:
-it can keep rice warmer for a long time
-the bottom usually doesn't get overcooked

As what was also said by another commenter, that can easily be solved by "fluffing the rice" after cooking.

Cons about the smart rice cooker is it usually has higher wattage.

In conclusion,
I do not recommend it.
The high price just doesn't really justify the barely noticeable difference.

the handle is probably for just putting it out of a storage place. in japan space is limited so you often dont can have it on the kitchen desk if you dont use it. so the handle is just for that. take out of somewhere and place it back there when done.

I have had my zoroshi for about 10 years now. It's a work horse, the keep warm function is awesome. No regrets on buying it I feel I have gotten my money's worth out of it.
But old school cookers are good too I had one before and it did ok, just the build quality caught up to its use and had to be replaced.

Trust me get the yum asia, as it has fuzzy logic so it cooks everything to perfection , steams vegatables perfectly and makes stues curries with coconut milk, chill concarny etc, its so versatile and its fuzzy logic times everthing to perfection and cooks your rice depending on what rice you use, Yes its top of the range and expensive and it looks better but totally worth the investment, its the no 1 brand so i strongly urge you to invest in yum asia. The latest version 2024 is a lovely model and you can see the you tube video from the company of Yum asia . As it cook vegetables better than ever i would recommend put your frozen veg in a pot add boiling water to get rid of ice get your sieve drain that water .,, then add boiling water to your yum Asia and set your programme. Its great for those who cant cook or wont cook, this will help you be a better cook, lots of nice recipes on you tube.

Not a fair test. You should follow the instructions for the Zojirushi . . . they are simple enough. I just bought a Panasonic SRCX108SST in the June sales for A$179 (eur112), a similar layout to the Zojirushi you have, and I couldn't be happier with the improvement in my rice.

Why did you leave out that Zojis come in basic mode, asie from having the plate evaporation switch, there are also basic micoms where are a little over $100. You have and Induction one which is more than twice as expensive - and there is also an induction pressure one which is twice that, at around $600 - which is the top US model while the top in Japan can exceed 1k. They also come in 3 cup(uncooked), 5 cup, and 10 cup models. I'm not sure why you went after Zoji for their middle model - as if you have to pay 300+ for a decent rice cooker. You can get a small micom Zoji for like $120 or less. All this video did was tell people mediocre rice is fine and did you even wash it?! What kind was it?! Do you even LIKE rice?!

2 cups of water for every cup of rice, then add 1 cup of chicken broth for perfect rice every time. bring water to a boil, add rice and set temp to simmer, cover and wait 15 minutes, stir and simmer to desired doneness.

The proper ratio for a Zojirushi is 2 parts water to 1 part rice. It's no wonder your rice came out wrong. Can't believe you didn't at least try it following the instructions, once things went so badly the first time.. this was a terrible review. My Zoji makes rice so good (even after almost a decade) most restaurants' rice doesn't compare to what it makes at home.

(lol) .. use Zojirushi. It's the best. And it's the best for reasons. REASONS DAMMIT. Just buy one. Nothing else is good enough.

What a useless video. "To be consistent im going to use the wrong method i use on my old rice cooker and completely ignore the instructions and ratios provided with the zojirushi" "im then going to by my own admission not use my standard rice cooker like i do normally" "im then going to completely ignore that a zojirushi rice cooker can keep your rice ready to serve for up to 24 hours"

Seriously - what was the point of not using the ratios provided inside the pan?

Id like my 5 minutes back

My first reaction? God! Please read the manual before doing "silly" things - like making randomly proportioned rice (and recording videos about "results"). There is a reason Zojirushi includes a manual with their machine. And a measuring cup 🤣 Second - I have been using a simple Zojirushi for the past 10 years (like the one you feature in the video) and only this year upgraded to their top of the line, sold in Japan only, pressure convection cooker with 6 induction elements. And? My impression was funnily enough about the same as yours going from low end to Zojirushi middle of the lineup. It is a bit better to be sure. Is it worth the price premium? -- about 500 Euros extra PLUS cost of a transformer (because these models are 110V only)? Umm... I'm not sure. I guess it is in the eye of the beholder? Ultimate rice is still made [every single day] by my Japanese mother in law in Sendai in her kitchen in a 30 year old gas rice cooker. I have no idea what magic she uses, but she makes the best rice I have ever tasted. And she does it day in day out. In an old pot without even trying 😬 I guess I will keep exploring the 121 programs (ways of cooking rice) our latest and greatest contraption proclaims to have in hopes of eventually finding the one that resembles Sendai 😅. One last thought : the Japanese believe Washington the rice "correctly" matters. Just another thought...

The old model of Aroma rice cooker with no controls is STILL selling and I can see why. It's the best on the market as far as I'm concerned and I wouldn't trade it for any of the fancy models that have controls on them.

you have to use the measuring cup included with Zojirushi to measure the cups if rice.

Otherwise you might as well just stick with the 20$ version.

Doing it a silly way making ratios up along the way obviously will not yield proper result.

This video is not valid to judge or do justice for Zojirushi.

Consider that you don't need the 300 Euro super expensive turbo model to have a similar experience. The cheapest versions from Tiger, Zojirushi or Cuckoo that work on EU power basically get you 99.9% of the way there.

I have a tiger that looks almost identical to the zojirushi you got, that even has a little 'steam basket' at the top so you can steam veggies when cooking rice (haven't used this a lot tbh, but it's there). International version, so works with 220V. Same as yours, produces perfect rice every time, lid opens up all fancy, can take it around with the handle, normal mode takes around an hour, quick around 25 minutes.

It cost me like 120 bucks.

I had cheap 'european' rice cookers before, like your cheap one. And while they work, they often make somewhat mushy rice, starchy steam water starts to come out of the top, the nonstick coating is terrible so you have to spend quite a while to clean it up. If you do not get the ratios perfect, your rice won't be that good. But with an actual modern one - cleaning it up is as simple as going through with a sponge 1 time with minimal pressure, it's fully clean. You pour in the rice, wash it a few times, fill water up to the level more or less, close, start, you're golden. No plugging in, no fiddling with the power latch that comes undone sometimes
