It doesn't matter how hard you hustle if your job and life circumstances aren't great. Some will literally never be able to own a Rolex or some other ridiculously overpriced, but cool wrist-mountable time computer.

So having a replica, homage, whatever you want to call it that you know isn't the real deal is still cool because you get to look at it and handle it and actually wear it vs merely dreaming about it. Also, there is risk to having thousands or tens of thousands of dollars just hanging on your wrist. Lots of watch guys got watches they never wear because they're too nice and expensive. Real shame really.

Thanks god I'm an enthusiast of vintage Colts and TAG divers. One Breitling vintage, one (or two maximum) TAG vintage with my current Khaki field and PRX is totally fine by me as an average Joe watch enthusiast. What about custom watches? Like when ppl take a watch and make it look like another style of watch l. Like Ik this one guy that takes Seikos and customized them to look like AP or Rolex or whatever the customer wants, and honestly they look amazing. Bc I don’t care about the brand, I don’t care about the profit, idc about bragging about my expensive watch, and idc about the movement that much either. So I’d rather get a custom seiko that can have any design i want and not have to pay more then 500-1000 dollars.

How do you feel about the ppl that do custom watches and make something cool like a seiko with a custom dial, case, bezel, etc? Bc I’ve seen multiple ppl that will turn a seiko into what looks like a AP or whatever watch you want and I think they look amazing. I haven’t got one yet but I was thinking about it, bc for me idc how the watch is worth and idc about movements and I’m not the type of person to flaunt my watch around. So if he can make a seiko have the same style as a watch I like but would never spend that amount of money on it, for example he has one that’s called the seikoak where he make it look similar to a royal oak , or he does a seiko nautilus that is again seiko but has a similar shape/design to the regular nautilus

Most watches today seem to be nothing more than replicas. Then we have microbrands which are basically the watch equivalent of Amazon private label products at this point.

No way, I would PROUDLY ware a clone Rolex because why would you go through the abuse and grease their goblin hands for a chance to get an authentic Rolex, I would feel like a complete fool if I did all that for a Rolex, I wouldn’t be able to go about my day with out constantly thinking “I’m pathetic, I’m a LOSER, what a waste of money this watch is”

Great advice! I 100% agree with everything! Except….the statement, “don’t buy a replica” screw them. I was on 3 different Rolex “waiting lists”:for a Daytona. I bought a sub, a GMT, and a yacht master. Over the past 4 years. I still don’t have my Daytona. I bought a super clone. I LOVE IT! I wear it every day, and you know what? I can care less if I get some desk rash on it, hit it against something by accident, and it is SPOT ON. I have zero desire to kiss ass and play the Rolex game anymore. If I do get the Daytona from a dealer, the first thing I will do is flip it. Play their own game. I’d also add another piece of advice. Don’t buy a watch that you can’t read the damn time on. I have a zenith el primero skeleton. The watch hands are the same tone as the internals. I can’t ever tell the time on it. (Omega makes an all black and gray sea master now too). No wAy.

Totally agree with all of these, however, i can forgive someone getting a “fake watch” if its a super expensive watch to begin with and they come out and say its fake to begin with. Some people no matter how much they save, will never be able to afford a luxury watch so far be it from me to dig at someone for trying to have what they never will achieve.

I looked at the Rolex Seadweller nearly 50 years ago & have dreamt of owning that engineering ever since.
I set out in my working life & from 1994, I saved every top-denomination note by merely putting them in a safe - without counting - so that I could one day realise my 1976 dream.
This year, I counted the notes - not knowing how much might be there & found that I could afford that watch. I contacted a dealer who had one for sale & he met with me, but I found the watch to be just too large & ostentatious on my arm. The dealer suggested a Submariner of the same design : I looked at what he had on his books & choose a watch that was some years old. I would have preferred the later model that he had - which was about 50% more, but my frugal personality for the better of me & I experienced some buyer's remorse.
I thought long & hard about it & tried to convince myself that I had done the right thing, but the savings would cover the better model & I thought :-

1) I will not even tell anyone except my sons that I have bought it
2) I really do want to own that later technology
3) I have dreamt of best technology in this style for ¾ of my life
4).I am going to do this once & once only
5) this is probably the only time ever that I should not be frugal
6) the cash is lying there - sterile & inert without other purpose

I lay awake : I had the money - a pile of inert notes that I had never even thought of as money.

I called the dealer & told him that I needed a psychologist.
He is going to bring the newer watch for me to see & is prepared to do the upsale with no penalty.

There is another layer to this story :-
I did not buy that watch 45 years ago because I had a perfectly good Invicta on my wrist - my 21st birthday present & I would have had to create debt to buy the Rolex. I have used this issue of not wearing a Rolex through the decades of my children's lives to illustrate that we do not create debt for unnecessary items - maybe for a house only - because of the power of compound-interest.
It is a family-phrase : "NOT THE ROLEX STORY - AGAIN !" whenever any of the children wanted to borrow money from me - I would just point to my wrist . . .
I really want this watch. The waiting-list in South Africa is around 3 - 5 years for a brand new one from the official Rolex dealership : I might be dead.
I hope to purchase the correct piece in the next couple of days. The premium is around 50% but, all factors considered - including that my one son would LOVE to inherit this watch - makes it OK, as he will not be tempted to spend future prices on a watch of he knows that this shall be his one day.
What has really made up my mind is that I need to get exactly what I want to finish the decades-old lesson to my children : put in the hard years; set yourself a goal; set up a method of making the journey that will not impact the family; be patient - VERY patient; be flexible once you have your goal within reach - make sure that it is suitable in the form of which you have had this mental picture &, finally, DO NOT DO YOURSELF SHORT AT THE FINISHING-POST, OTHERWISE IT WILL ALL HAVE BEEN FOR NOUGHT.

PS. Deal with a reputable dealership who REALLY wants to satisfy his clients' desires or needs & is prepared to stay with you as your mind settles.

What if you have the real Rolex tucked in your safe box at home but don’t want to lose it if you live in a crime ridden country and get the exact replica?

I started getting interested in watches last month after buying my first one but it was a lot for me. It's about $400 but that's a lot for me. But even then I just started adding watches I like in my cart and great timing was I recently got a CC. I had to calm myself up and not buy lest I bury myself in debt. Great thing I still have some self-control 😂and I'll just have goals and save. Get when I can get it and if it still is around when I have the money for it.

I love knock-offs -- I mean those that are well-wrought clones of the real McCoy. They are a class by themselves, a product of painstaking effort to approximate the quality of the one being copied, the amazing work of a compleat master forger. I get a kick out of thinking that I'd bought mine for a just few hundred bucks, while the one who bought, say, a real Submariner must have spent a hundred grand to have theirs. Am not fooling myself -- I know very well that I'm wearing a fake, and I don't care if someone thinks I'm wearing an imitation coz it is. But I'll bet they can't distinguish a fake from a real one while looking at my wrist when walking on the street or standing on the train. As to my colleagues in the office, they don't really give a hoot, and if they recognize that I'm wearing a Rolex, they'll most naturally assume that it's a knock-off coz they know I can't afford the real one. By wearing a knock-off, I'm mocking those who are foolish enough to spend so much for such a watch. If you're rich, fine, you can afford it. But if you're a salaryman like myself and had saved your hard-earned money for a luxury item, I pity you coz you acquired a status symbol that is clearly beyond your status. As for me, it's not a status symbol, it's meant to be a slap on the face of those pretenders who are spending money that, given their level of income, is better allocated to more useful things. As to those who are saying I'm supporting sweatshops, slave labor, criminal gangs and all that, the heck!
