This truly is the window into what corporate greed looks like. My heart goes out to everyone that lost their job, though I wish I could give more than my sympathy. May they all find the same success in their future endeavors without the fear of losing another job.

Everyone who's supported Wizards as they continued to make terrible decision after terrible decision; everyone who's continued to give Wizards their money as they've demonstrated total contempt for their audience; everyone who's bought into the dreck that Wizards has turned out alongside the products that actually don't suck; everyone who's defended Wizards as they've put out products that "aren't for you" and bought the ones that may or may not be, "for you," - all I have to say is, YOU did this. You've demonstrated to Daddy Hasbro for years now that the brand is invincible, that they can do anything and put out anything and people will buy it. They know the brand will survive, and the profits will keep coming. They can fire half their talent and tell what's left to work harder and faster. They could slash employee's salaries and cut corners with the quality of the product. They know these moves are bad for the company and that it's bad for its image. SO WERE THE PINKERTONS. SO WAS MTG ANNIVERSAY EDITION. SO IS UNIVERSES BEYOND. This is just the latest move in an ongoing series of corporate ineptitude, and you know what, most people are going to let this one slide too.

By the way, the suits took home large bonuses specifically because they increased net profits by reducing the company's expenses. If 1000 employees no longer need to be paid because they were let go, the company saves money! That is, literally, all they see, because suits aren't human beings, they're unfeeling robots in meat suits. This happens in every industry and IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. That's capitalism, baby!

Company execs figured out a long time ago that the easiest way to increase profits is to sell the same amount of their product while paying fewer people. That equals more money going into their pockets because they will almost never see the solution to be " give myself LESS MONEY so more people keep their jobs". They don't understand the meaning of that concept.

Hasbro is selling out on MTG and it's IP. They milk it dry while they can. They started with the first secret lairs as a ultra rare product for consumers that are willing
and able to pay that sum. Then they made secret lair products more frequent and affordable to get the consumers with less
funds. Then came the whole universe beyond stuff to get more people to buy magic products that are not yet into MTG.
Notice I did not call them more players because they are not necessary players but collectors. And that is how Hasbro sees it.
Not a game we love but a collectible product they sell.
And the whole policy of giving a single card so many different art styles to collect while tournament play does not see much love anymore shows that Hasbro does not care for the game, for the gathering of people but for selling the product.
Yes it is good for a company to make money and no I dont blame them- its business. What I try to explain is the direction they are heading. They milk this product dry till it does not hold enough value for them and they wait and see if there is a company that is willing to buy the brand. And there will always be companys willing to buy the biggest tcg on the planet. The way of milking Mtg dry makes sense for Hasbro since they dont care weather or not they sell the brand at one point. Firing people that worked on that product is just the next hint in the direction I lust explained. The product sells better than ever. So how can we further increase the income? Lets reduce the cost of the workforce. Since it is a collectible now, playtesting and story telling is not as important anymore. I am so sorry for the people that were let off. l am also sorry for the people still working there that love magic and see the direction hasbro is going.
They are sitting in meetings hearing about the sell out of MTG and have to agree to company politics. Cant wait to see what they come up next.

Hey Prof- why dont you
ask an economics professor to make a video colab with you to give his or her expertice on what is happening at Hasbro with the brand Magic the Gathering. Im sure a former collegue of yours is willing to do that.

There is the logic here? Was there not talk in the community about less product, less bling?
A lot of the revenue was made in a way destroying the retail chain and realizing reprint equity at the cost of sales channels and players?
Who needs the persons creating the 10th variation of a card?
Depending which activities will be stopped by WOTC the layoffs are a good sign (except for those who lost their job without having an attractive alternative at hand).

Understandable decision, D&D IP for exemple is an unknowed and quite old universe. Nowadays surely nobody would like to play hours and hours in a video game based on D&D. Surely a game like that would never be the game of the year beating stuff like spiderman, mario and zelda.

After all of the PR nightmares they have had this year, they could have had an easy win if Chris Cocks announced that he and other executives were forgoing bonuses to retain jobs in the company.

Like that's just an easy layup PR win on top of a good showing of the new digital tabletop at PAX

WotC has been making it hard to support them with their choices for a while now (and I don't mean the content of their releases, but things like their clear focus on increasing profits, the whole Pinkerton story and trying to dip their toes into AI art). I used to still buy boosters or the occasional D&D book if I liked the product enough, but I am honestly at the point where I feel more moral getting proxies or pirating books.
I genuinely hope that WotC is sold off to someone who cares soon, so I can continue to support the people who create things I love.

The answer is greed, simply its just greed. Capitalism creates the pyramid in which those on top get ever growing wealth, while those on the bottom, no matter their contributions or even in times of great success, are still laid off/fired with no other reason than just to make a CEOs bonus bigger.

But I agree with what you said about how the CEO of Nitendo didn't do layoffs but they cut there bonus down to keep that from happening. Wish Wizards of the Coast would see this as a Good way to bring people around and for future Generations to keep this game thriving to.

All signs point to Cox moving the company in a new direction further away from bankruptcy. It seems like he’s worried that what happened to board games will happen to Magic, and he’s gathering enough money to make a big purchase, probably of a gaming company to extend the company further in that direction. I expect it to be the focus in the next 10 years

Guys, we live in a capitalist society and we're experiencing one of several economic collapses we've experienced in a century of poor economic decisions by an indifferent and ignorant government.

Many, MANY companies are firing or laying off staff to mitigate spending while maintaining a facade the share holders and boards want to see. It's a bandaid for a bullet hole scenario.

That's the real reason for this. Corporations don't care about people, they care about money.

Nobody working jobs like this should have millions in income.. no job in this physical world should be paying multi millions of dollars. The hardest working people and jobs in America especially are some of the most lowest paid.. or at the very least arguably only just reaching a 3 figure mark. And only around 20 percent of individuals make at least 100k or more a year. Almost 80 percent of people make 50k or less a year doing the most crucial work, shitty, hard working jobs.
