Exploding Head Syndrome is a dramatic sounding medical condition – but it is actually a relatively benign sleep disorder in which people experience a loud or frightening noise just as they are falling asleep or waking up.

Some people also experience visual disturbances like flashes of light or lightning.

It used to be thought that this was very rare, but new research has revealed that it is quite common in people of all ages.

Some people experience attacks once or twice only, other people have them in clusters over a few weeks or months, but most people have them on an occasional basis for their whole lives.

Although it can be alarming at first, it doesn’t normally require treatment other than in the most severe of cases.

Not all doctors know about this disorder, so the condition may be misdiagnosed as something else.
