Beautifoll documental movie. I think Troyan story could be connected with story of Golden fleece, we know that greek capitan Jason eloped with Medea, Colkhian Princess. Also Achile's father, Peleus was one of the Argonauts. So first blood was on Greeks, anfter that eastern peaople ubduct Helen. Also Homer is mentioning ship of Argo in his poem. The gaps from these events is only 30-50 year.
ОтветитьThe artefacts were found in 1994 not "in a private collection in the West", but in Moscow. There is a Wikipedia page on it - Priam's Treasures.
ОтветитьSo….Schliemann didn’t find Troy at all. Frank Calvert did!!!!
ОтветитьThank you. I first watched this on American public TV which rebroadcast a lot of BBC content. This made a lifelong impression.
ОтветитьEVERYTHING on your YT account was STOLEN from others......you are a total LOSER.....
ОтветитьSo strange now to hear "West Berlin".
ОтветитьWonderful
ОтветитьI watched that series so many times I lost count. The best documentary ever at least for me.
ОтветитьUnfortunately there's neither a great movie about Schliemann and his quest for Troy nor a good movie about the Trojan war or the Odyssey! All three subjects are great. But Wolfgang Petersen's movie "Troy" is a star studded disaster, and Hollywood has never tackled the Odyssey. However, there is a four part Italian/French/German tv mini series of the Odyssey from the end of the 1960s, which is actually good! The cast with the wonderful Greek actress Irene Papas as Penelope and the magnetic Bekim Fehmiu as Odysseus, is great, and the script is quite faithful to the original source!
Whatever, these ancient stories, their historical roots in the mysterious time period of the so-called bronze age collapse, and their re-disovery by Schliemann and his followers will never lose their fascination!
Schliemann was a rascal who made many mistakes when he started his excavations. But he was also able to learn from his mistakes, and his methods became better and better. And he was the forfather of modern archeology.
The music is just mesmerizing.
ОтветитьDid he really just say "Alas... we cant even be sure that he was Greek."? Insanity
Ответить"Angel from Buffalo city" even pope cant help, my advice was good for her hand washing other hand and she mock me. One day will understand
ОтветитьWhen this showed up on TV in the US, I copied all 6 episodes on
VHS tape. I would re-watched when ever I wished.
Michael Woods is so interesting you feel like you're there with him!
Ответитьgreat tele- on to part 2 now
ОтветитьThe soundtrack of this documentary is something special and this an incredible documentary
ОтветитьEpic.
ОтветитьHey wood, How you like your 2022 Britain ?? Your folk are being replaced
ОтветитьI love archaeology and I have begun to hate archaeologists. Here is what bothers me some of them don’t document their finds well, including sketches, high quality pictures, sketches and translations but that is not the worst, the finds are boxes up wind up in the basements of museums, lost once dug up, mis labeled and sold for and finally worst case the museum is robbed and some of the artifacts wind up in private collections or melted down by thieves. So while they have the best of intentions for the most part, what ends up is that plenty is lost forever in each generation. Part of me almost wishes they had left it for some more trustworthy future curators. That is the sad truth.
Even Schliemann ended up losing the jewelry he found, sure blame allied bombing or wartime looting. The net net the jewelry of Troy would still be there had he let it lay, oh sure we got a few cheesy pictures with his wife wearing them but big freaking deal. I could create a list….recently a Ukrainian museum was looted, the great museum in Iraq was looted. Then isis destroyed priceless ancient works. Let alone the Nazi book burnings or the Spanish Inquisition. Humanity makes me sick with their greed and avarice.
shoe horn the Nazis in there while we're at it
ОтветитьLove this. Watch it from time to time the last Twoo decades.
Wood is a Great narrator and historian.
Watched this as a kid on PBS with my brother. We loved it then love it now. The best documentary ever made..so beautiful and Michael woods is the best . I love his voice and his passion.
ОтветитьThe Greeks were a slave culture, the Hittites were not. I liked the theory that Helen got caught in a slave raid and ended up in a Spartan harem. Paris rescued her and returned her to her family. This anti-slavery city had to be destroyed.
Ответитьkay chat shit if u want but Schliemann's p cool
ОтветитьI'm back again. I was watching the awesome channel "Pete Kelly" and his "History Time". He is just incredible!! I watched his vid on Troy and of course came back to the Master Professor Michael Wood and crew!!!
ОтветитьWow, it's been ages since I've seen this and, having seen many Michael Wood documentaries over the years, it's stunning to see him so young. I'm sure many thought the gold treasure was pilfered by Russian troops in '45 when viewing this. And, yes, it was! But it wasn't taken by looters thank goodness. It's in a museum in Moscow (Puskin?) and will almost certainly stay there. LOTS of looted art is being returned lately, such as the Benin Bronzes, but...well...Russia tends to look at things a bit...differently 😜
ОтветитьMichael Wood must be the best historical documentary maker ever. Bar none. I just wish there was more like him today, instead of the dumbed down garbage that makes up most of the contemporary bs that's foisted on us now.
ОтветитьThe first time I saw this I was a senior in high school, and had just finished reading the Iliad over the summer. At the time I assumed it was all just legend. Seeing the ruins of the actual Troy sent chills up my spine realizing that Hector himself must have walked right this was filmed.
ОтветитьWow Frank Calvert is the genius behind modern historical discoveries?
ОтветитьSorry but Michael Woods narration is far too stilted , striving
for dramatic effect and failing. He's no Laurence Olivier .
The lame , cliche ridden script didn't help I suppose. ?
And Terry Oldfield's incredible music. I love the music they play when they go over to Mycenae. And all of these awesome old professors now. Like Ken Kitchen. He is STILL going strong. I also read everything I could get my hands on including Nancy's book on the Sea People.
ОтветитьWOT A ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
ОтветитьProbably the most engaging historian to have made documentaries. One can feel he is fascinated by every aspect of people and history. Much missed and I wish he would make more.
ОтветитьThis is very good, but they waste time and footage on the host. I want an accurate host not a sex symbol.
ОтветитьHere again Ukraine/Russia we're not used to this really. But one thing we see throughout history....... wars and the taking of land and property. From BC the Hittites, Myceneans and all through that area. Nippur and all the old Sumerian cities. Sargon started the "army" per se I think. But man I would hate to be the peasants growing grain each season only to have Sargon and his warriors show up. Assyria liked to flay a la Ramsey Bolton their victims. But this murder Putin OMG I don't remember Stalin, and Hitler the autocrats. NO WAY. This is what you get with an autocrat and a dictator. Something that idiot Trump wanted to be. Wake up to these "types" people.
ОтветитьId watch ANYTHING with Michael wood in. I hope this is as good as his Conquistador series. That was something..
ОтветитьAbsolutely brilliant series. Made even better by Terry Oldfield’s evocative soundtrack.
ОтветитьIs Michael wearing an exotic hat, a wig or has he had his hair dyed in the cutaways around 30 minutes in?
ОтветитьIn 1994 the Pushkin Museum in Moscow admitted that it had taken Priam's Treasure from Berlin in 1945. It js now displayed there.
ОтветитьBrilliant, I remember watching this as a teenager. I was hooked and it led to me reading Archaeology at University
ОтветитьThis is gold
ОтветитьI keep coming back to this and can never get enough — watched the full series yet again!
ОтветитьI love the theme music of the series… And Michael Wood is marvellous
ОтветитьI really cry sometimes...I went from a Catholic school girl to a hippie to a married woman and never knew until I was in my late twenties how much I loved history and archaeology. I wish I could have done something with it but not then. And now it's a little late to become an archaeologist. BUT I can go on volunteer digs. But I watch so many of these shows Joann Fletcher and her Egypt reminded me of the way Michael presented his videos. I watch and just wish.....

ОтветитьI first read the Iliad and the Odyssey before I was 12. They have left a huge hole in my soul to know the truth. But I doubt we ever will. The stories will be lost and no one will care. I am now 71, and time will pass me by
