Gx derailer chain and crankset, xo shifter, nx cassette because the cassette replacement is muchhhhh cheaper.

I switched up the nx derailleur, shifter, and rear cassette with GX. The truvativ descendant crank is actually a gx crank just powder coated and labeled descendent. I have the nx crank and shifter as a back-up.

awesome vid like always.. one thing though is the xo1 and xx1 shifter are absolutely diff. way smoother and easier to press button on XO1 and xx1 over the GX

I've got a 2020 Trek Roscoe with SX. I only use it as a commute bike with pannier racks on flat ground as it's so unreliable as a mountainbike. Tic, tic, tic, clunk. Derailleur and cranks are the main problem items. The hangar and B adjustments are well looked at. So I bought a Roscoe 6 the year after as it has Deore 10 speed - works fine! For SX from what I've figured all up you can use a Shimano long cage derailleur and the better Eagle X01 chain (to go with the Sram cassette). I now have most of the spare parts to change it all out to 11 speed Shimano - despite losing some low range gearing I'm taking this option.

Very helpful, thanks! I just bought an entry level hardtail (Rockhopper expert w/SX drivetrain). I've heard horror stories about SX but so far so good. If/when the SX derailleur craps out on me, think maybe I'll just go to the NX instead of GX. If I ever decide to swap the crankset though, may go GX for the fairly substantial weight savings.

best thing about the nx cassette is clearly that you get replacment parts for 11-13-15 tooth sprockets. easily the first ones to wear out for me in the northern flatlands. In that case it did not matter whether i drove a xx1, gx or nx cassette. they were all done after 3000-4000km . however on the xx1 this means 400€ lost in scrap, gx around 130€ in scrap, on the nx it's just 25€ to replace the defect parts.
the nx cassette combined with the gx groupset has by far the best value for me.

You refer to XX1 for the high end comparison but never mention X01, which is almost the same, but without the bling. It is quite a bit cheaper than XX1 though.

On the rear derailleurs, did you notice that the GX had removable pins for servicing, but the NX was riveted together? Not everybody will keep their bike long enough to need to dismantle the derailleur, but personally I I have a problem with anything that can't be fixed. What about chain materials etc. are they the same? I do think you get what you pay for and I would prefer to save for GX. The different free hub compatibility is an interesting one though, that will influence decisions if upgrading, I'm sure.

Just wanted to let you know that I just upgraded from the SX to the GX rear derailleur and holy crap what a difference. I almost went with the X01 but I the GX is so much crisper shifting than the SX that it is well worth the extra few bucks to upgrade. Thanks for your videos, I find them very informative.

Did my research just yesterday and came to the same conclusion. I also guess that the one piece cassette would be more expensive to replace if one of the sprockets is damaged.

If you compare pricing of each components, beside the cassette, the cost difference is marginal.

I had an SX derailleur come apart after 300 miles. The 2022 replacement looked like an unlabeled NX, same pulley system and less plastic than the original SX derailleur. The new derailleur used M4 screws for the limit and B screw, the original's screws were basically sheet metal screws.

I strongly disagree with the reviewer!! Even if you are riding just for fun, you should always seek for light weight components. Especially if you’re on an aluminum frame. I would not recommend heavy components to any rider. Don’t ride anything lower then GX the lightweight cassette or X01. It’s so important bc why have more weight???

Can I use NX cassette and GX for RD, shifter, chain? I have Shimano HG driver with 10 speed cassette, will it be a good combination and can fit the 12 speed NX cassette?

I think a mix of both is best. NX crank set, GX chain and cassette. GX cassette is key because then you can get a better wheelset. Cheap wheelset use the shimano freehub driver, better wheelsets use the SRAM xd driver.
Last upgrade for the NX rear derailleur is to buy the upgrade kit for the bolt the holds the rear derailleur onto the hanger. The stock NX bolt kit is cheap, but the nicer upgrade kit fits the NX derailleur. Works well, and saves some money, some weight, and increases reliability and shifting performance

It’s definitely worth the $$$ to upgrade to GX. The use of better, lighter materials and bearings in the derailleur are a marked improvement over NX.

GX and NX are night and day difference... NX has an issue where it does not want to come down from that 50T cog in the rear, even if it is adjusted perfectly, about half of the NX systems have this problem in my experience. GX and above do not have this problem.

The One
The One - 18.04.2022 21:28

NX materials are cheaper and heavier. The tolerances are not as tight so durability/reliability will suffer sooner. The RD pulleys don’t use bearings, just cheap bushings. The bolt connecting to hanger is trash and has play. The RD and shifter are made of plastic. The cassette is limited to HG freehub. The cassette is limited to 11T. The cassette is very heavy. Need I say more???

The GX has 520% more range and also has a slightly better derailleur design. The shifter is significantly better as well. The cranks are also beefier. I'd say it's worth it especially if you are taking everything apart anyway

What’s your opinion about mixing the slx cassette (with micro spline of course), Shimano chain (I think sram is a little more wide) and shifter/derailleur Nx (o other sram). I change the rear hub of my brand new Cannondale Fsi carbon 5, because the quality of the rear hub (formula ain’t good), and take the opportunity to upgrade to a shimano slx cassette because the price of a gx cassette vs the slx. For me works just as good, maybe best of two worlds, but I’m sure you have more knowledge than me. Thanks!!!
