the best pizza in my life was from a tiny seaside town in Calabria like Diamante or Cirella - I it was from a hole in the wall (literally), wood fired, and I believe it only had ham and artichoke on it - but it lives in my memory forever. We were sleeping up in the hills in our kombivan and came down to the village for dinner. Other days we'd enjoy coppa con panna gelati and cream in a village square for passeggiata around sunset when the villagers all dress up to promenade - the young to eye each other and play up, and the old folk to gossip - bel paese - the Italians know how to live.

Life must have been close to hell for Alessio in the USA. Even I, a Dutchman, cringed when I heard Jessi (who is lovely, but she is American, so she can't help it) compare the beautiful salami with American pepperoni. America, the land of no culture, no history, not knowing the art of dolce far niente (doing nothing and intensely enjoying that), the land where everyone wants to stand out instead of acting normal. And especially, the land where food is made of plastic and additives. Welcome home Alessio. Welcome back to Europe.

I would choose here to live! Family, friends and the countryside. It’s beautiful. Y’all look so happy here. In my opinion living anywhere else in Italy, family would still be missing, and that is the missing ingredient in life.

It’s fascinating that the grocery store isn’t too different to what we have here in Sydney, Australia product wise, we also have a lot of Italian delis but I’m sure it’s all much cheaper in Italy.
