I had a Chaplain in the US Army do something similar. He was in Kuwait, and had a rule that he is always introduced to the boys his teenage daughters date.

Chaplains are, by international law, non-combatants. They are not allowed to carry a weapon. So they are authorized to have a guard when needed.

He "needed" a guard for this particular video call back to the States. The soldier even volunteered when he found out why he was needed.

Imagine you are dating a woman. She says "You need to see my father". Stressful even in normal circumstances. The thing is - her father is POTUS. Ok, you can cope with that. Then he says to you "Come to my office". IT IS THE OVAL OFFICE . And worst part - there are highest officers of all US Military casually sitting there.

I had a similar experience as the boyfriend. The thing is that I wasn't intimidated at all, I just quickly realised I was dealing with a bunch of middle aged, room temp IQ wankers with the maturity of toddlers. To be honest it was quite pathetic. I get what they're trying to do but if you want your daughter to make good life decisions you make the long haul effort to raise her with values and lead by example, this flexing bullshit is the exact opposite of that and demonstrates that you have zero confidence in her decision making abilities. by the time you meet the boyfriend it is way too late to shape her into the adult you wanted her to be. I fairly quickly and unceremoniously dumped that girlfriend (tough guy dad did squat about it). She ended up a crack addicted biker's baby mamma..... I dodged a bullet with that family.

That look at the end between CJ and Bartlet reminds me of when the President "accidentally" was caught on a hot-mic implying his opponent in the next election was stupid. CJ eventually figures it out and calls him on it, and he has the same calm reaction that says nothing, and everything!

The common assumption is that President Bartlett introduced the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs to Vic Faison as a way of intimidating his future son-in-law. That may be the case. I look at this scene from another angle. When Debbie knocked on the door and announced that "your nine o'clock is starting to melt," Bartlett saw how nervous Vic was. By being introduced to Secretary Hutchinson and the other military leaders, Vic seemed to have regained his composure as well as to have been basking in the congratulatory wishes by them.
