My mom's mom was forbidden to speak the language by her husband because he didn't understand what my grandma was talking about with my mom, who was a very young girl. It was meat and potatoes in their house. My mom shared nothing about the culture, etc.

We Ukrainians make mostly gorilkas, not vodkas. Vodka is different product and it's mostly industrial but even vodka we call also gorilka. Don't even ask me why :) As for horseraddish tincture, it is called hrinovuha and red pepper one is called pertsivka. There are lots of different -ivkas and -ovuhas like zubrivka, gorobynivka or medovuha and all these are gorilkas. Medovuhas we make could be yet ANOTHER drinks though, like Scandinavian mjod or Scottish mead, way milder than 50 or 40 degrees :)

I don't know if anyone mentioned in comments you ve got funny name for the buns with borscht. You pronounced it as Bambushka..the correct name is Pampushka for single (aka -Pumpooshkar) and pampushki for plural. Great you ve enjoyed Ukraine and food.!

You are drinking vodka wrong. You must exhale, than drink whole shot in one move and them eat 2-3 spoons of borsch. After that you should inhale air. Main point is that you don't feel the taste of spirits - just the taste of food you've just ate. Vodka helps you to enrich the taste of food, you are eating.
