Hi Ashlynne, I just wanted to say I've been really inspired by your videos & its awesome how thoughtful you are when it comes to money. I've been watching your content these past few months now. I turn 26 in 6 days (I believe we are around the same age) sadly from when I turned 18 till I got married at 24 I was quite careless financially & got myself into stupid debts like phone plans that suck the money out of you & took a few years to pay off. I tend to look at what I could have done & feel so guilty but I know we can't rewind time. After I got married to my best friend back in 2020 (luckily for me he is a lot smarter financially & that has rubbed off on me ) I started to prioritise a lot more. We are now working on a few savings goals together & are also happily expecting our first little bub (a boy) in May this year. I know things can & will improve from now on. :)

My husband and I take out cash when we are paid every two weeks. We allocate it to various envelopes ie: groceries, incidentals, gas etc. We also pay ourselves 50$ each every two weeks. That is our “fun money” and we can spend it as we see fit-no questions asked. This has drastically helped us stay on budget and meet our financial goals faster. We want to pay off our mortgage in another 8-10 years and renovated our basement into an apartment to help us reach that goal.

My favorite micro saving tip is an account that adds a certain sum of money to another account every time you pay with card. For example, my account transfers 1.50€ to my micro savings account. It adds up quickly and is super easy! As a student, I can easily build up to 75€ euros per semester when using this method. Plus, the money that you have saved, can works as a small emergency fund as well!

Edit: aaagh loved this video thank you for all the amazing tips! I really want to shop more mindfully because I often find my self literally going food shopping every few days and spend so much!! and end up buying so much crap not gona lie... I want to learn to do my food shopping more on a budget because of all the videos I watch like £20 food budgets etc a week on groceries, when I would spend over £30 ( $40 ) every like 3 days which is CRAZY🙃 not the mention I got 8 takeouts last month impulsively which im so ashamed of lol 😶❤️ xx

I am 26 and I lost my job half a year ago and budgeting really opened my eyes and made me realise how much money I spend on bullshit. I recently got a new better payed job and I am definitely planning on sticking to my budget and use the extra income for my savings… I know the rule is 50/30/20 but I am planning on switching the 30/20 so using 30% for my savings/debt and 20% for wants!

Hey Ashlynne -- I have a question. I realised recently I've strayed very far from my minimalist goals and the way I was living in 2019. Having to stay at home and being deprived of so many types of entertainment and adventures has obviously affected my (and everyone else's) mental health and I finally noticed I've been spending on things I don't need or always want outside of the impulsive moment as a way to fill that hole of want. I was wondering if this has affected you in any way as well, even if just the urge without acting on it, and how you might have dealt with it and corrected the behaviour.

Living below your means is a choice, and so I would say that it's okay to live within your means if you'd rather do that instead. Money management is going to look different for everyone, and especially if you're working with a very low or fixed income, I would suggest thinking twice before buying something that's not essential or that you could learn to live without. I only say this because I see a quite a few customers in my line of work who have to scrounge around looking for extra change, or even have to take more money out of their account just to make that one purchase.

So helpful! Thanks for sharing. One tip I’ve found helpful is to use cash for some of my discretionary items like eating out and groceries. It really helps to have something physical in your hand that you can see how much you have left for the time period you’ve budgeted for. Another tip is to include fun money in your budget planning. You work hard to stay within all your other budget categories. Having fun money is great and helps you stick to your plan - because it’s money you can spend on whatever you want. No strings attached.
