The Difference Between Jpeg and Raw

In short ….
A Raw file
RAW file preserves most of the information from the camera, without processing and compressing it. Like an old negative (if you remember what they are!). And like a negative you can’t actually see the image until it is processed. The negative is just holding the information needed to produce a print just like a Raw file does. To see the image from a negative, you need to process the negative with an enlarger and chemicals to make a visible print. In a similar way, you need to process the Raw file with digital programs like Lightroom or Photoshop to produce a visible image to print or put on the internet.

A Jpeg File
A jpeg is a visible image or print. It is a compressed version of a Raw file. The benefits are you can see it, print it, send it. You have moderate information in the file to enhance in digital programs but not as much as you do a Raw file. Your camera can bypass the processing of a Raw file and just give you an instant image, a Jpeg. What your camera has actually done here is compressed the Raw file for you.

The difference in file size
On average the Raw file is 5 times the size of a Jpeg file. This means there is a lot more information in the file to play with, or enhance in digital programmes.
RAW file = 25MB same file as a Jpeg = 5MB

My recommendation is that if you’re still learning how to take control of your pictures, i.e. the depth of field, ISO, compositions etc. stick to shooting in Jpeg for now. It’s much more important that you get the shot right first than what you can do with it afterwards.
