Why did Lucy Letby become a serial killer? What was her motivation for killing babies? Could she have been stopped?

In this episode, renowned Criminal Psychologist Dr David Holmes sheds light on the case and shares his expertise on what her condition could be and why she committed these horrific crimes.

Join us as we discuss the psychology of Letby and other serial killers, the condition known as 'munchausen by proxy' and why her parents are still standing by her side.

Dr David Holmes' book 'Abnormal Clinical & Forensic Psychology' is available now and his channel with his other work (and music!) is at @drdavidholmes.

RN of 30 years here , cameras are a great idea and are utilized in some areas in a ward and certainly in hospitals but one must bear in mind that patient confidentiality must be maintained and having cameras or visual monitoring devices in a bedded ward could infridge on those rights. In the hospitals and psych units we had monitoring in areas we stored medicines and common areas but not in the ward/ cubicle where us nurses work in. I hope this makes sense?😊

This is all lazy content. It’s actually easy to prove her innocence if you take a few hours to do the research.

I for one don't believe she is guilty. The baying mob mentality when there was no actual substantial evidence is astonishing.

interesting. I was talking to a friend after this trial and we both wondered if she had been an accountant, would things have turned out differently or would she have murdered her own children or parents when they became elderly.

Look. It was found at autopsy. Baby after baby. AIR EMBOLISM. This doesn’t occur in isolation. And after ruling out all other possibilities, she’s THE COMMON DENOMINATOR! I cannot understand why she was allowed to carry out these atrocities for so long!

I don't think Munchausen by proxy is associated with murdering the victim. Or maybe in extreme cases, but never do they just go from identifying a victim to murdering them intentionally within mere days of being their ward. That's just straight up psychopathy.

I think HG Tudor said it best, Letby killed them to gain fuel. I think Letby desperately wanted to feel “special” and powerful. She gained fuel when she saw the reactions of the parents. She gained fuel when people told her they felt bad for her. She also felt special for surviving a difficult birth herself. Each time a baby survived even worse situations than she did, it bothered her. I don’t think the doctor was the main reason, although she gained fuel when he showed her attention as well

The fact that most world leaders are psychopaths by definition means the world has already been taken over by psychopaths unfortunately, and with their faces on TV screens all over the world it's inevitable that they will influence how other people behave! It's a scary time to be alive for all us normal or empathic people

For me the evidence nowhere near meets the threshold for conviction. Whether she might be guilty, or even probably guilty is not enough. Not a trace of hard evidence, no direct eye witness accounts of her doing anything, no credible motive, no prior history of crimes and absolutely nothing at all in her entire life which would raise any suspicion about her character. It is a travesty of justice. A witch-hunt which hopefully will get overturned one day. If you can lock someone up for the rest of their lives on this basis we should all be looking over our shoulders

I'm wondering why the ideas of sadism and jealousy weren't explored. There was more going on than just the fashionable munchausen by proxy tag and the psychopathy. Obvious delight at seeing parents grieving and actively wanting to experience that is not explained by a condition whereby someone just wants to gain sympathy for themselves. Also the act of taking away the parents' happiness due to the perception that they had something unobtainable for her - there's a bizarre deep rooted selfishness and wickedness which is why I think everyone is so fascinated by this case.

Great interview with a very interesting Doctor about Letby and her evil and shadowy personality..
Letby somehow reminds me of the worse(and none was any better),of female SS guards at the death camps. They found their murderous pleasures in a murderous place, created by a evil regime. There they found their choice of victims they treated worse from a mass of victims.Letby in her choice of victims and methods would have flourished in the camps back then..But the awful truth is Letby flourished anyhow in todays world. Not in a death camp..But in a hospital ward..Awful she wasn’t stopped sooner..

Lucy herself was a premature baby. She almost died at birth. As a result, as an adult, her parents smothered her. She had no freedom. She wanted to hurt THEM, hence, she targeted the victim group as close to home as possible; parents of babies.

The answer is very simple as to why Lucy Letby was allowed to get away with murdering babies and that is there is NO safeguarding of any of the patients Nurses do not work in pairs and have access to the medicines they give, nothing to stop them from spiking or giving wrong treatment deliberately so its really that simple until we have proper safeguarding in hospitals there will always be lucies and probably a lot worse than we know. When we go to hospital we are amongst a broad range of occupations from the trolley man that swings you around down to the surgeons and anaesthetists.. Are you telling me this nurse acted alone and nurses were suspicious so wtf did they do about? I hear nurses laughing and joking amongst themselves its almost like a chore to go and see to the patient

Thank you Joshua and David for addressing questions that have been plaguing me for many months now about this case - and in a very no-nonsense way.
I doubt Letby will divulge any sort of admission anytime soon… she has absolutely nothing to gain from doing so. If any good can come of this now it should be that we have a better understanding of these extreme personality disorders hiding in plain sight. I wish there was some kind of incentive (such as small prison perks) offered to these people to comply with studies but I believe it’s seen as some kind of entrapment or an infringement of their rights 🙄.
