You looked at KL & Jakarta which are the capital cities...but considered them as countries - Malaysia & Indonesia...so your context is not accurate...need to be more accurate next time.

Living in KL is miles better than Jakarta. Jakarta is full of traffic, flood, polutions. Just avoid it for long term living. For short trip holiday maybe ok

When you do all this ‘better living’ between KL and Jakarta…have u actually do a study or just on your own whims? As a Malaysian definitely will take aback while noting that no cities are perfect…but seriously KL and Jakarta? The major factor that you should see when thinking of moving to another city is to see the utilities infrastructures eg like electrical and drinking water quality etc…dont get me wrong just have a look at this proper survey done by Mercer’s World Cities Ranking for Quality of Living year 2023…
Singapore 29
Hong Kong 77
Dubai 79
Kuala Lumpur 86
Johor Baharu (Malaysia) 107
Bangkok 124
Manila 135
Jakarta 148
Out of 241 countries.
There you go… even another city in Malaysia better of than Jakarta

I dont know where you got your data... kuala lumpur "official" size is just 1/3 or Jakarta.. so it is quite small, but it got about 74+ malls compared to Jakarta 84+, in which per square kilometers, KL still got more malls than Jalarta..
if you want to count Malls in both cities, you might need to look at "greater jakarta" and "greater kuala lumpur" which includes surrounding cities.
then you could google up and find up that KL got much more malls than Jakarta.. Al-Jazeera reported that Greater KL got 727 malls. and retail centers.
cheers.,,😀

Yes, Indonesia way more better than Malaysia. Its have a really² cheapest value for a quiet well-facilitated apartments/condos, not really bad for civil transportation system, highly richly in cultures, variety delicacy cuisines, foods and the most important is the numbers of notoriously tropical beaches, islands, rainforests, wonderful mountainous, and many more natures treasures. Its way more better than Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam in all of those aspects.

No way Jakarta got better public transportation, unless you prefer motorcycles option. The KL train systems are much better.

Jakarta or Indonesia got the numbers of malls, because they are much bigger country. But KL got more numbers per km definitely. The KL standard and varieties of malls are way more better even for American or European standard.

Though, the much greater aspects of Jakarta-Indonesia generally, they got more genuine cultures. KL Malaysia are too much melting pots.

KL are better city to live, but Jakarta are very interesting city to travel.

What is there to compare...of course as a Malaysian i love this findings but it won't be nice to compare one to one, Jakarta vs KL. It create negativity between between them but it's better to compare for example amongst top 5 cities in SEA. Like Bangkok, Jakarta, KL, Ho Chi Min and Manila and put them in ranking. My sincere comments. Tq

If we talk about Public transportation only, not including ride sharing, i think KL is better. The LRT, MRT, BRT, KTM, ERL, Airport rail link & monorail all of it are seamlessly connected. With the MRT circle line coming up, getting around KL city will be much more easier.

Since you seem to lack sufficient knowledge about public transport in the two cities, especially in Kuala Lumpur, let me share some comparisons between the two cities.

Here’s a comparison between the public transport systems in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Jakarta:

1. System and Network Coverage

Kuala Lumpur

LRT, MRT, and Monorail: KL has an efficient Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), and monorail system connecting key urban and suburban areas.

KTM Komuter: Serves longer-distance areas like Klang and Rawang.

Buses: RapidKL operates most buses, complemented by free services like the GoKL City Bus in central areas.

Integration: Key hubs like KL Sentral connect multiple modes of transport seamlessly.

Jakarta

MRT and LRT: Jakarta has recently launched MRT and LRT systems, but coverage is still limited compared to KL.

TransJakarta: One of the largest Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems globally, with dedicated lanes for buses ensuring efficient travel.

Commuter Line (KRL): Covers broader areas, linking Jakarta with surrounding cities like Bogor and Bekasi.

---

2. Accessibility and Convenience

Kuala Lumpur

Public transport is well-integrated, with smart card systems (Touch 'n Go) usable across trains and buses.

Modern stations with escalators, lifts, and clear signage in multiple languages.

Cleanliness and punctuality are generally well-maintained.

Jakarta

TransJakarta buses have extensive routes, though road traffic can sometimes slow operations despite dedicated lanes.

MRT is modern but still expanding its reach.

Ticketing systems (JakLingko card) integrate multiple transport modes, but integration is not as seamless as KL’s.

---

3. Cost

Kuala Lumpur

Affordable fares for most services. For example, MRT and LRT fares typically range between RM1–RM6, depending on distance.

Free buses (GoKL) help tourists and residents save money.

Jakarta

Cheaper overall. TransJakarta fares are very low, typically IDR 3,500 (around RM1). MRT and LRT are affordable but slightly pricier than buses.

---

4. Traffic Challenges

Kuala Lumpur

Efficient rail systems help avoid road traffic, but buses can still face congestion during peak hours.

Jakarta

Severe traffic congestion is a significant issue, especially during rush hours. While TransJakarta buses have dedicated lanes, other public transport options can be delayed due to traffic.

---

5. Future Developments

Kuala Lumpur

Expansion of MRT and LRT networks (e.g., MRT3 Circle Line).

More focus on green and electric buses.

Jakarta

MRT and LRT expansions are ongoing to cover more areas.

Increased efforts to integrate all modes under the JakLingko system.

---

Conclusion

KL: Offers a more integrated and extensive public transport system with greater coverage and ease of use for residents and tourists alike.

Jakarta: While improving rapidly, it still faces challenges in integration and traffic but excels in affordability and its vast BRT network.

The traffic in KL is crazy for a city of it's size but the traffic in Jakarta is a whole other world of pain. Some claim that Surabaya is even worse, but that is difficult to imagine - I naively thought that Bangkok had the worst traffic in Southeast Asia until I landed in Jakarta.
