Moscow on the Hudson starring Robin Williams is such an underrated 1980s movie dealing with Russia vs USA, communism/capitalism, and immigration. A great movie for getting a feel how it felt back then.

another important detail missed:

Cuban missile crisis was because of the Jupiter Missile System installed in Turkey that can hit Moscow

It's really wild to think that the dismantling of the Soviet Union happened when I was a kid. That's not that long ago.

There is an argument that the Cold War didn't end in 1991, Russia became a modern era weimar Republic, which many people saw as ineffective with all the economic issues Russia had in the 90s, along came Putin who was a former kgb officer based in Dresden at the fall of the soviet union etc, and seemingly is attempting to rebuild the former soviet union subtly!

I can't help but wonder if Nixon opening China should be viewed in a different light now, 50 years later with the way China has become a powerful adversary, largely on the back of outsourced western industry made possible through the "opening of China". Maybe if the Nixon administration had continued a hard line stance on China we would be in a better position today. If Nixon never "opens China", outsourcing to China never becomes possible, reducing the profiting and IP theft possible in China, slowing their abilities to become an authoritarian adversary.

I really don't get why he keeps repeating that Ukraine is something hotter than what happened during the cold war. In Korea the USSR was arming North Korea to fight American troops. There were even russian pilots flying migs to fight the americans. During vietnam the USSR armed north vietnam to fight the americans. In both conflicts soviet weapons and sometimes even soldiers were killing american soldiers. Then later in afghanistan the US were arming the resistance against the soviets.
The US could send in their airplanes with US pilots into Ukraine to fight the russians and we would still be at a level that we already saw during the cold war.

I don't think you can talk about Russian missiles on Cuba without talking about US missiles that had already been based in Turkey.

Describing the planned missle site in Cuba as "a pretty big provocation" is ... a choice, given the US installations in Europe and Turkey. I'd call THAT a provocation.

The latest I'd label a start is 54, not 60. 54 is when Molotov suggested that NATO invite the Soviet Union.
NATO declined.
The next year the Warsaw Pact was formed.

Many people would label '48 the start with the Air Lift.

bringing up the cuban missile crisis as a "provocation" is bad history. the us had an illegal blockade of cuba and placed icbm's in italy and turkey. the aggressor here is not the soviet union

Okay, sidebar, the Cuban Missile Crisis STARTED as a result of US placing nuclear weapons in Türkiye. While the idea behind this move is to ensure that their protectorates are able to competently fight off a full scale invasion, it's a flawed line of thinking though. Russia responding with placing nuclear arms in Cuba, while a bit inflammatory it's an equivalent response. I'm not rationalizing the situation, I just think that context is important.

This guy has no clue what he's talking about in regard to the fall of the USSR. It wasn't mysterious at all. Clinton's puppet Yeltsin was literally BOUGHT and he handed over control to Putin who was the USA'S CHOICE to become an oligarchic dictator.
