We live in a world that tends to degrade young people for being lazy and self-focused. In addition, adults often publically condemn the "saggy pants and hip hop" of urban youth culture. Meanwhile, the young people in our communities are fighting to have their voices heard and their perspective acknowledged.
In this session, we will look at the history and evolution of urban culture examining both the key traits and significance of this movement. We will also explore both the healthy and destructive forces that create the overarching cultural perspectives in urban communities. How can mentors, not of this culture, best connect to the people from this strong and vibrant culture? This session will be led by youth.
Date: Wednesday, September 10, 2014
