I couldn’t disagree more about what you said. Hawaii is about native, nature and you can’t experience this when you stay at the resort or hotel, Hawaii it is only about spending as much time as you can swimming, snorkeling, hiking spending as much as you can with native people and camping backpacking. You need to go to Hawaii at least for 3/4 weeks. I have some friends who live there local people who live there for a long time since they were born so they can take you back country seeing and please do not take helicopter rides. They disturb everyone, noisy and terrible.

Each time I have gone to Hawai'i it goes like this: sight-seeing one day, relaxing the next, then sight-seeing, next day relaxing.
Take water shoes. My Keens and pair of flat sandals were all I needed. I take shorts, tops, cotton dresses and a hoodie.
Buy an underwater camera!
Remember: reef protecting SPF!
Malasadas! Yum!

My wife and I have been talking about taking a trip to Hawaii. Is it a must to rent a car? I'm just starting to research things but the biggest things we wanna do is beach time, maybe a few trips on the ocean (whale watching, etc) and local restaurants, shops, and culture type events. Bucket list item, attend a Lūʻau. Every vacation we've taken I've spent a lot of time driving and would really really like to look around for change. Awesome video, thanks for the tips.

Not covering up from the sun; or not protecting their children from the sun. Hats hats hats, people! You need a hat.
I worked in a tourist shop in Kona; that's my #1 tip for enjoying your trip. Avoid the burn!

Just got back from Oahu. Have a fabulous time. I agree with booking things in advance...especially luaus. Those book up quickly, and trying to find one last minute is an exercise in futility. Book luaus in advance.

Most importantly, my advice to someone going for the first time:

Sunscreen

Water shoes

Bring them.

Too many Pina coladas at a luau. Had to pass out in the car for several hours before driving from Lahina back to Waihlea.

1) You'll be jetlagged
2) Parking fees, resort fees
3) Not booking early
4) Careful in the oceans.
5) Visiting too many islands
6) Respect the land.
7) Pack appropriate clothing
8) Weather is different on different places in the island
9) Every island is unique and different
10) Try something new. Challenge yourself.

When you are going to the beach in Hawaii, PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR MAN O WARS. THEY HURT AND ARE KINDA HARD TO SPOT. Not only man o wars, but there are sea urchins, turtles, and many other marine animals you definetly dont want to touch. I live in oahu and recently went swimming and i wasnt even out that far in the ocean and there were hundreds of urchins EVERYWHERE. Not only the animals, but people can also steal your beach stuff when you are swimming. Be careful and dont litter please.

FYI....Hawaiian lawn bowling aka ulu maika(Oooh-loo-my-kah)distant cousin(?) to bocce ball. If wanting to visit multiple islands, look into NCLAmerica/Hawaiian Island cruise...4 islands, 5 ports, 7 days. You can book tours/activities uniquely specific to each island. Haleakala(House of the Sun) is 10,023 ft above sea level. Haleakala is so named from Hawaiian legend involving demi-god Maui, as referenced in "Moana"

Parking at beaches can be painful, so start your day early - thinking you can have a sit-down breakfast and hit the road at 10 am and drive to the beach will not be beneficial, besides, you may have to pay for parking and you may have to try and retry a beach. My favorite is 69 Beach Big Island, early morning or around lunch - great for snorkeling and swimming - quiet black sand beach.

We had 3 snorkelers. We traveled from Texas. Usually, one person stayed on shore anyway, so I would now just take equipment for 2. We took 3 full-face masks, 3 float belts and three sets of fins, plus towels, etc.. For the amount of time we went snorkeling was a lot to lug around. I'm glad I had all I needed, but I'm traveling lighter next time.

Just got back from Maui. I personally will say, don’t snorkel if you’re not 100% comfortable doing so. I decided not to snorkel for various reasons that gave me pause. Definitely- “If in doubt, don’t go out.” Don’t feel that you HAVE to do anything you’re not sure of. You’ll still have a wonderful time! After all, it’s Maui!

BE PATIENT! When you come to visit, understand there’s plenty of us guys who live here who are just trying to go about our lives. When you’re gallivanting all over looking for fun stuff, it’s us that you’re passing. And some of us are a little rough around the edges. Respect us and we’ll respect you back.

Your videos are so helpful! Me and my hisband are planning to go to Hawaii to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We will be going either late August/early September. We had trouble deciding which Island to stay at but after watching your videos we chose Maui since it would be our first time going. We love adventures/snorkeling/excursions. We cant decide which part of Maui or which town to stay at during our stay that has the best beaches and that has easy access to the rest of the island and excursions...any recommendations? Also cant decode whether to stay at a resort or a vacaction rental? Help a girl out!! 🙏🏻

Love this video too! For the island of Oahu- what beaches do you recommend to learn to surf? Do you recommend surf lessons/camp or just renting a board for the day or a few days? Company? We have surfed in Costa Rica before. Kids are ages 10-16

Take dramamine before you go on a boat ride, even if you don't normally get motion sickness.

We went to dive with the mantarays. The ocean was a bit rough that night and it was 20min. super bouncy ride. My wife got really sea sick and felt bad for 2 days.

Not planning our routes and overloading our schedule. We went to the big island last year and for some reason had activities planned on the same day on different sides of the island 🤦‍♀️ honestly don’t know how we didn’t notice that but then we assumed it’d be fine not realising how long the travelling between would take. Ended up missing 2 of our 4 planned activities that day and the last 1 of the 4 we just cancelled bc we were too exhausted to do anything 😂

My mistake travelling to Hawaii, was actually travelling to Hawaii. If I wanted to see homeless women defacate and urinate on the street right in front of our hotel, I could have saved $10k and stayed home and just driven down town here. Prices for food and drink in Hawaii is double anywhere else. Asians everywhere are also very rude and don't give a crap if they run you over either. Oahu is a dump honestly. They don't keep grass trimmed or mowed, and most the houses were built before I was born in the 40's and 50's and are selling for ridiculous amounts of money. Look, I'm 2 hours from the beach here. I'll suffer through that drive in the future before I ever return to Hawaii. And Waikiki is so commercially over spent that it borders on ridiculous. Prada, Tesla, and so many other high end designers and restaurants made me feel like I was in Beverly Hills. The headaches of TSA, airlines, and airports with ridiculous schedules and prices are just bordering on insane. And supposedly early May is off season? I'd had to see peak season in Hawaii, as it was insanely over crowded. Oahu and Waikiki specifically is so crowded that traffic is worse than most major US cities. There are so many other beach options in CONUS or even the Carribean that I'm honestly wondering what the allure of Hawaii actually is.

Don’t underestimate the need for sunscreen and ruin a few days with a bad sunburn. The sun is really intense that close to the equator.
