It is called patriotism, not nationalism. Nationalism is when you confuse nation and national values with ethnicity and make up "popular spirit" stuff, claiming that the ethnicity equals these or these morals, which happenstance equals your own morals: convenient, but false. And patriotism is not to be confused with the left or the right: anybody, left or right, can be a patriot without being nationalist, defending your nation from outer threats, such as Trump/Tech-bros/MAGA.

To be clear, we don't CHOOSE to think of the US. Your media is ever present and so we passively know more about you than you do about us. If our media flooded south you too would know more about us than you currently do.

The current political climate offers proof of the correctness of anti-Americanism. The US wants to snuff Canada out as its own, sovereign State. Ditto Greenland. The only difference between the US and Russia, today, is that tanks aren't massing on the Canadian border (- yet ! -). No wonder Trump is so pro-Putin, and anti-Zelensky.

What led to all this ? SHEER AMERICAN ARROGANCE. The kind that could see Trump as offering legitimate, decent leadership, and worthy of succeeding in elections. I see Canada as a civilised and decent version of America.

This is inaccurate. This was not racist country under Britain. Even Quebec rejected the siren song of the Americans. this happened in the 18th century. The French knew that Great Brittain would allow them to keep their religion, their language and the their culture. Canada was the first to outlaw slavery even before Great Britain. The British defended us in the War of 1812. Many fought with Canadian soldiers and Indigenous.

Excellent review of this topic. The American war of Independence was over Home Rule - how much to the colonies? Well, there was a lot per the charters (8 colonies had royal guvs, 3 proprietors and CT and RI always elected theirs) and the locals had 150 years of experience basically running themselves and fighting wars against Spain and France more or less on their own while Britian was focused on the Sugar Islands of the Carb Sea before 1755. The division in 1775 was political not cultural 45% for a break, 25% for keeping ties - for multiple reasons. The loyalists were Called the King Loyal Americans. Over the decades the Loyalists turned into Canadian (a word for the French speakers previously). The desire for home rule or a say their governance was immediate after the new guv of New Brunswick declared an election to the Assembly void because the faction that want a say won and rioted. He had 305 of them arrested for sedition. Britain never learns or didn't until responsible government was granted in 1848 which meant that the govs and executive councils were not longer in the saddle and royal guvs had to accede to the Assemblies.

The difference is that things like nationalized health care, gun control and immigration are not seen in Canada as left or right wing - just necessary. I am a progressive yet conservative person. In Canada, the two are not mutually exclusive. This is yet another way that Canadians are not at all like Americans.

As an American, I find both the tariffs and annexation talk to be abhorrent!

Lord Durham was sent to find solutions in upper and lower Canada, as both had rebellions in recent years. He specifically told the British to unite the colonies as a way to limit French political power by forcing them to be a minority in the union.
