Sorry to say this Americans but, although Sargent was such a great painter, he's not the goat, try to learn some art history and you will find some painters way better than him

Sargent apparently preferred to use a grey-primed canvas and started with neutrals rather than dark to light.

One sec, but he says himself that he always started by blocking in mids and then worked out of the mids in pairs of tone - the next darkest value and the next lightest and so on until the the deepest tones were added.

He also defiantly didn't use washes, he used excessive amounts of paint by all accounts, very slightly thinned with linseed and turps.

Sargent is my personal fav. portrait & figurative painter, but when you consider Fechin, Velazquez, Whistler, the Wyeths, Winslow Homer and many others, as well as the variety of subject matter in which they triumphed, and easily matched or in some cases surpassed Sargent, landscapes, busy scenes, cities, weather, imaginary etc... it's not really fair to refer to anyone as "The GOAT" in art. But I'm glad he's your fav., mine too!

good job maybe a little stiff but I never did one so maybe its no easy, also maybe less volume on your voice and more gentle since we are talking about very gentle things likes of wedges and tones and value blabla bla... and gentle music so people can get into that universe and subtle things .... the secret things that make a portrait especial....

cool video. about your "GAOT".... if you believe there is such a thing as the "greatest artist of all times" or of any time, ever, I am sad to inform you that you might not understand what art really is. Of course, one has his favourites and they are of utmost importance to your development and one must by all means study such artists, but claiming they were, are and will forever be the sole owners of such ridiculous titles like "the greatest x" does neither yourself nor any living human being any favour. To make my point really understood, the very medium of art you're using, that of paint, is in and of itself 2 dimensional ! Nothing 2 Dimensional can ever be "greater than " or "lesser than". If you understand basic maths, you understand that only 1 dimensional things can be more than, or less than. It is the stupidity of the education system, that is based on a one dimensional system of values that has ruined us all into believing such ludicrous things, but in the real world, nothing is 1 dimensional, no one spot on Earth is the "best" or "better than". You may argue that this stop is better than another, but only by giving it artificial value, because it lacks intrinsic one. See, 3 is greater than 1, but one tree is not better than another by default, but only by human choice ! So sure, Sargent is the GOAT for you ! ( also goat, really ? XD ) but he himself could have never existed without the countless extraodinary artists before him, without being born in Florance Italy, without being a part of Paris Salon ! without the impressionists before him! There is a obvious reason why no american artist has ever achieved what he has, and answer lies within this sentence XD Because any All American artist at that time, could have not had the chances and exposures that Sargent had due to his privilege of being born in the right place, at the right time and being liked by the right people. Paul Cézanne was systematically rejected by the Salon, yet he is considered the "father of us all", by none other than Picasso and Matisse ! so you know... ALL of these titans of fine arts deserve their place and their dues !

The question of originality is a good one. Supposing that an aspiring painter could perfectly get the drawing and colors from a masters work. Our personalities always emerge in our work. Individuality is never lost and it'll emerge more and more as we mature..That's my humble opinion..

To call Sargent the goat is an over statement. He was a master of water colour and Portraits. But to put him above all other giants in art like Michelangelo and Titan and Turner and the hundreds of other titans is giving all of those artists who were the great influencers of their time a lesser status that they don't deserve. De Laszlo was an artist of the same quality of Sargent in portrait painting. 😊

"The greatest painter of all time"?!?! How can you say such a stupid thing? How limited is your art history knowledge? Have you not even heard and seen any works of Jan van Eyck, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Holbein, Velazquez, Hals, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Manet, van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso?! It is an insult to call this guy the best painter. I am also amazed by some of the comments here. Bouguereau?! Phahaha. Wow. Simply hallucinating.

I would argue that his friend Sorolla ultimately did more ambitious paintings, specially during his social realism period, and that his technique is at his level. Also both are children of Velasquez.
