it isn't misogynistic for a man to say a girl can't play baseball WITH MEN. it's just a fact.
ОтветитьAtta boy, Mark, go Braves ❤️
ОтветитьLove this story!
I read a lot about Babe Didrikson when I was a girl😊
I dimly remember hearing about this story, but don't remember where, maybe from a book on Babe Ruth, that or from my dad who grew up along the Mississippi river.
ОтветитьI have more female content coming up gals.
ОтветитьYo that's awesome
ОтветитьOn the one hand, trying to knock it out of the park when an upstart girl pitches to you, but severely underestimating her, seems like something a very oldschool pro might do. On the other, letting yourself get struck out by her as a nice or chivalrous thing, and also to make the story more spectacular, also seems like something a very oldschool pro might do. Regarding his other comments, just because an oldschool guy was sexist doesnt mean he was one-dimensionally, cartoon-villain sexist at all times and in all situations. I think it could have happened as it seems, but probably didn't.
ОтветитьThe Babe got struck out by a girl. Good thing he had a bar in the trunk of his car to drown his sorrow 🙃
ОтветитьJust FYI, my mother was a fantastic ball player and coached boys teams in the 50's and early 60's. She loved the game. Wish she was still alive to ask her if she'd ever heard of it.
ОтветитьJust feeding the algorithm, really enjoying the channels content.
ОтветитьAre you sure they weren't just being nice and let the 17 year old girl strike them out? I'm tired of these contrived stories of female wins as if we are fighting a war against each other. The only ones fighting this are females and their foot stool orbiters that YAS over these stories.
ОтветитьAm I the only one that think women’s basketball could be much more entertaining in they played In smaller playing surface? 8 foot rims? We have women’s tees.
ОтветитьBreaking news: Both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig choose to drop a coin into a Salvation Army cup instead of battering it into an absolute oblivion.
ОтветитьBorn in Boston and a Red Sox fan my whole life. Ruth will always be a member of the Red Sox in my book, even though he did play for some obscure team in New York for a little while.
ОтветитьThe way he spontaneously chucks the bat after strike 3 & glares at the ump like, “are you f-ing kidding me?!” Looks real to me.
Thanks for the great story! Love this channel! Found you from the VivaBarnes sidebar. I hope that appearance really gives you guys a boost! 💜
I would say real. I really like the idea of it. 😁
ОтветитьGo Jackie...!!!
ОтветитьDazzy Vance wasn't a lefty.
ОтветитьDazzy Vance didn't win his first game until he was 30 years old. ---- and he's right-handed.
ОтветитьI bet they strikeout on purpose
ОтветитьI can't possibly know if it was rigged or not, but like other commenter Magor wrote, it's just a better story and a nicer world if we take it for real. And, like Mark said, a unique trick pitch that the batter gets to see for only one at bat could actually do the trick.
ОтветитьThis was and still is a true story!
ОтветитьNot a baseball ⚾️ fan but it’s very interesting, just for fun was she transgender ⚧️ before it was a thing? lol
ОтветитьNever heard about it, but I do believe it was real….
Ответитьin 1997 I attended the game in which Ila Borders made history as the first woman pitcher to start a professional baseball game. She played for the St. Paul Saints. She struck out the first batter she faced. She had a decent curve ball and change up, but her fastball clocked at just over 80 mph.
ОтветитьA girl from my high school was barred from playing softball because she was HUGE standing at 6'5 and had very manly hands, very broad frame. She also had several older brothers who kept her on her toes. She wasn't transgender nor was she intersex. She was able to master the sinker and play on the HS boys team at 17 even got a couple of the boys kicked off because they kept yelling that she was "taking steroids" after she got them struck out. Couple of blood tests proved she wasn't, but that really didn't stop the kids at school from bullying her into quitting. She was too big and broad to play on the girls team, too good to play on the boys team 'cause it would hurt their egos.
Her father worked as a mover and her mom worked at unionized glass bottle manufacturing plant, meaning that she definitely inherited those capabilities from both sides.
(Edited for grammar, punctuation and spelling.)
IT WAS REAL !!!
ОтветитьThat ball still didn’t hit him hard in the face…I would’ve knocked him out at 65%. Just saying.
ОтветитьWhy would Lou’s parents name him after a disease?
ОтветитьI like to think it was genuine and not rigged. The way Babe threw down his bat upset at her beating him and he continued to look annoyed in small group photo afterward whereas Lou Gherig looked amused or not annoyed that she beat him too. 👍
ОтветитьNever heard of it but seemed real to me! Ruth was such a pig, I'm sure he wouldn't allow a mere woman to fiddle w/his superior ego/prowess! He probably expected to knock the 3rd pitch into the next county. It did seem like he was not ready for that 3rd pitch as if she hurried up her delivery before he was set alas too late! Great story! Bravo, young woman...bravo!
ОтветитьAbsolutely believe she struck out Lou and the babe.
Ruth was right about women playing MLB, Never happen. hitters won't be fooled for long with a one pitch arsenal, 162 games?
REAL
ОтветитьMark is such a master story teller
ОтветитьI don’t believe there’s an existing story that isn’t better being told on American Untold Stories.
Ответитьreal
ОтветитьI’m sort of agnostic as to whether she truly struck out both Ruth and Gehrig. One of the reasons I tend to NOT believe it is that Jackie Mitchell is quoted as saying, “Hell, better hitters than them couldn’t hit me. Why should they’ve been any different?” I mean, what?! There were NO better hitters than Ruth and Gehrig - arguable ever. So the fact she felt the need to almost dismiss their talent/skill… I think speaks volumes. But again, who knows.
ОтветитьI think that the reason that you haven’t had individual women competing in men’s professional leagues is down to the inherit sexism that discourages women (to this day) from being taken seriously in sport. The reason you touched on, sore male egos.
ОтветитьBabe Ruth & lou gehrig let the girl strike them put
ОтветитьSlow down the video & zoom in. The catcher reaches all the way across his body, so the called 3rd strike was WAY outside
ОтветитьI think it’s true because later Babe Ruth went on to tell the press that women shouldn’t be allowed to play baseball. Probably was embarrassed.
ОтветитьReal. Babe Ruth didn't want to be struck out by a girl or have Gehrig get a hit, and he didn't. Also Gehrig would have liked to get a hit after Ruth struck out. I think it was the real deal and we have film of the event. She certainly had a great hall of fame teacher.
ОтветитьBabe Ruth was also a pitcher and probably had big hands as well - I think he was 6'2" but interesting that Nolan Ryan says in an interview that he did NOT have especially big hands and then explains why he had to go about other ways to generate velocity - which he obviously did -
ОтветитьDid she strike them out ? well the Babe was also on of the all time Strikeout leaders as well and he was no Rod Carew or Ted Williams so it is not impossible since the ball would come in at weird angles due to her height - I would also bet that Women College Softball throwers - (fast ones) - could strike out Major League guys 'at first' because the ball is doing weird stuff coming up from the hip - and yes - over time guys would adjust but it is silly to compare Women and Men on issues so dependent on strength - I mean we have weight classes in UFC and Wrestling for a reason right ? Is it exciting to have 200 lb fighters pound down 140 pound guys ?
ОтветитьIf it was a stunt then why would Kennesaw Mountain Landis ban women from playing professionally the next day?
ОтветитьI choose to not believe this story because I think that was made up by some short haired man hater in at women’s study class at a liberal arts school in upstate New York somewhere. Too bad bc I am sure it was interesting at the time.
ОтветитьAI propaganda. Funny no one ever heard this before. Even feminists would have discussed this. 🙄. As a man that could identify as a woman I find it bustling to women everywhere that we are viewed this low that history is made up to make us feel better about our shortcomings when compared to the accomplishments our male counterparts.
ОтветитьDuring WW2, my mom played for the Navy Department; she was on a womens' team. She was always very athletic. She loved the film, "A League of Their Own".
