🎯 Li had been against guns all his life because as a big man, who'd been in security work all his life, he saw men who relied on guns as weak men, who can't defend themselves with their fists.
Now as he's older, Li knows he can't rely on his big physical size alone to avoid or handle physical confrontation. I used the opportunity to remind him of his privilege, and not everyone goes through life, able to avoid confrontation by being physically intimidating.
I told him as men, we're both privileged because we don't generally go about our daily lives, fearing for our safety like women do.
How is someone smaller statured, or elderly, or disabled, supposed to defend themselves against someone more physically powerful and intent on doing them harm?
We also talked a great deal on safety and how easy it is to be negligent, even at a range and especially at a range. The 1st time inside a loud indoor range is always overwhelming and intimidating, and once Li got over the shock, he did great shooting guns the first time in his life.
His first shots with 9mm were mostly touching, and then the overthinking takes over, and dry fire practice helped reinforce his trigger control and he could consistently keep groups inside a 4" circle at 5yds.
