Abandoned - Disney World's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

At least nobody died! Tho those sea serpents will be nightmare fuel for me… thanks.

I remember going on this when my family went to Disney World in 1978.

It wasn't abandoned. Disney retooled it and transformed it into a "Finding Nemo" ride.

Road on that when I was a kid! Really fun actually went underwater on rail tracks

I wish they’d bring this back! I also thought it would’ve been cool to have “live” mermaids in the lagoon too.

It's a shame it closed. I remember visiting it and I remember seeing a giant octopus that was submerged and had trapped a submarine similar to the one we were in. It was terrifying.

Why the hell would bury the other subs and not make money out of them. I'm sure there are a lot of disney degens that would buy a sub for a lot of money.

I had the pleasure of riding the 20,000 Leagues ride. That was back before Disney turned into complete trash.

I remember riding that as a kid with my parents and sister. It's what sparked my interest in Marine biology. Unfortunately I never was able to pursue that part, instead doing 20 years in the USN. I loved that ride.

I rode this ride as a kid. It was awesome.

I'm pretty surprised that Disney didn't try to auction off the subs maybe another park might have refurbished a couple of them or that could be a crown jewel of a rich Disney collector

It's likely they kept the ride vehicle in the best shape and put it in the Disney Vault.

I don’t understand why they buried the submarines when they could have auctioned them off to fans…just seems like a waste and kind of a pollution of the land

As a kid in the late 70's, this ride blew my mind. That moment when it felt like we were submerging blew my mind. I think I rode it 5x that day? My grandfather was over it after the first time. But he kept going with me over and over. This ride, like my youth is gone. All good. Moving on.

They could have easily made this a seasonal ride and cut operational costs

Coupled with occasionally adding shows with special features like a dancing actual mermaid or a real king triton/ Poseidon

It could have lasted a lot longer

I rode this in the late 1970's- early 1980's as a kid

They keep threatening to close the subs in CA, but I think there'd be a riot.

I went to Euro Disney on a 2014 high school French trip and it always amazes when I hear how it had initially flopped. the place is amazing!

I got hurt on this ride in 1984. Bittersweet memory.

This and Haunted Mansion were my favorite attractions!

Wow...I still have pictures at Sea World from 1984 and that green boat thing was in the back ground...I was 5 yrs old and I'm 45 now!!!

Something nobody said anything about was another reason it closed was because of diesel fuel prices. The subs ran on diesel fuel. Found that out from another work that worked their they had to stay late to refule up the subs every night.

I rode this ride in the early 90's it was fun, but very hot in the sub.

I went on this ride ONE TIME. ONCE. I remember not being impressed and made my skin jump out. I wanted off that ride so fast as soon as it started to move. I don't remember who rode it with me or I just went alone. Shrug I definitely remember the wear on the ship!

It is impossible to feel grateful and depressed in the same moment.

Was looking forward to going on my favorite ride for my 10th birthday only to discover it was closed for maintenance and would never come back. Still mad at Disney for that.

I grew up in Florida and was lucky enough to be at Disney world on day two. 20,000 leagues under the sea was a ride that I always wanted to go on, but in my many visits as a child, rarely did I get to enjoy it. More often than not, it was closed for one reason or another. I was sad to see it go. It really sparked my young imagination! I still wish that Disney would bring it back in a more modern form. But alas, they tore it down and now it's Ariel's grotto, a character meet and greet spot. 😢
