Well, something I learned as a us infantryman was that you can do the whole thing right and it can still go to shit. But it doesn't sound like they had a good clean patrol either.

It has been proven that they lied about a lot of their patrol, they blamed Vince for being seen by the sbepard, the shepard boy years later admitted he never seen them at all, they blamed a dead colleague to detract from their bungled mission.

They never killed nobody 😂 a former SAS soldier went over there about 20 years later and came to the conclusion they all lied about their killings. The only true part is Ryan made it out

'The Deadliest SAS Mission No One Talks About' - Because its been talked and absolutely flogged to death.........certainly in the UK anyway! To be honest, much as I love Chris Ryan (Colin Armstrong) as an author, I do believe there were some embellishments in the story. Same for Andy McNab (Billy Mitchell). Chris & Andy were the 2 guys who benefited the most financially from the experience, despite the conflicting accounts they each gave. But there have been a number of investigations independent and otherwise into the mission which conclude a number of things said by both men do not appear to have happened - I won't go into specifics here, but the very in-depth investigation done by Michael Asher (himself ex SAS) into the mission, and his subsequent book paint quite a different (perhaps more truthful) picture.

All credit to the guys like I say but nowadays it seems to be the norm. Guys join a country's SF unit, serve a number of years and then can't wait to go on the civvy track and talk about what they did. The most recent guys in the UK to do that are Ant Middleton, ex SBS, Olli Ollerton ex SBS, Jason Fox ex SBS and Billy Billingham ex SAS. They're all on Instagram, all doing the TikTok circuit and have become just cardboard social media 'stars' - parroting the same bullshit. I used to follow them but then just got sick of it, its all the same. Nobody can keep to themselves anymore it would appear!

They broke SOP #1 in Desert Warfare - don't go into the Desert on Foot. There wasn't enough transport to go round. There was no firefight. When they were debriefed at Hereford - none mentioned this Firefight.

"Everyone talks about it" would be more accurate and it was probably their worst mission ever. The trouble probably started with the concept and planning rather than the men involved.

Not long after McNabb's and Ryan's books were released another book by the SAS RSM was released called "Eye of the Storm" which cast a lot of doubt over both accounts. However, what was apparent from all 3 books was that the regiment was badly underprepared for the tasks it was given. Later commentators have said that at the time of GW1 the SAS had been long involved in counter-terrorist operations in Northern Ireland and had allowed their deep reconnaissance skills to atrophy. As well, the regiment was populated with a lot of men who had no war fighting experience as many from the Falklands war had left.

From what I’ve read about this job it was poorly managed from the outset. The NCO responsible for procurement of mission critical equipment was pulled off to do another job that ultimately was a complete waste of time when he could have been getting things such as up to date maps they were available if someone had made a trip to London to get them, ensuring all communications equipment and designating frequency’s would work in the area of operation because desserts are notorious for causing problems. Failure to use vehicles, failure to brief properly on local customs in which a gunshot in the air is say hello rather then starting a full blown contact. The management in the SAS is akin to gambling with men’s lives it’s the nature of the work but when the stakes are high it’s negligent not to do everything possible to tip the scales in your favour.

Both McNab's book and Chris Ryan's books are far from accurate- with both grossly over exaggerating certain events, and in a couple of instances, blatantly fabricated events. The mission was a disaster, McNab's operational planning was fundamentally flawed. His idea of operating solely on foot was ridiculous- especially given the weight of kit that they were carrying. I met a Corporal on a course in 1996 who was from the Royal Green Jackets- 'McNab's' parent regt. He told me, "Steve M was a cowboy." Michael Asher- ex-Para, ex 21 SAS, and RUC Special Patrol Group, author of, 'Shoot To Kill,' made a documentary retracing the route of the patrol. He basically debunked much of McNab's account- especially the firefight with the mechanised Iraqi forces- it NEVER happened, it was fabricated in order to 'spice' up the book. Both McNab and Ryan are persona non grata as far as The Regt are concerned.

From the two books you get the feeling that one was filled with false facts but it’s clear Ryan had zero respect for Mitchel ( McNab) and how he conducted the mission. It is also shameful how these men were let down by disastrous errors of technology and equipment.
