Fun Fact : Many if not most of non-Tamil speaking Indian students will take Malay as their second language because it would be easier to learn.

When I was in Secondary 1 in 1987 for example I have Eurasian and Gujerati classmates taking Malay as a second language.

Indian Muslims who speak Malay as well as students of Arab ancestry also took Malay as second language.

As an American, I use American Sign Language (ASL) I understand Singlish better than regular American English.
People in America always criticize my errors (phrase noun) and tenses.

That "mother tongue" thing seems messed up. If it happens to match your home language, you'll wind up "studying" children's books for course credit. If it doesn't match, you have to work hard.

It's amazing how Tamil is official at the national level in Singapore despite being spoken by 3+% of the population while in its birthplace India it's spoken by 7+% but isn't official at the national level. The same goes for all major Indian languages except hindi which has bipartisan political support from ruling elites.

Singlish

- English vocabulary
- Malay grammatical structure and the iconic emphasizer -Lah is of Malay origin
- Loanwords mostly from Chinese dialects and most of Singlish emphasizers such as -Lor, -Leh and -Meh.
- Some Tamil loanwords as well

I'm half singaporean and half english (live in england). However, at home i speak a mix of english, mandarin, hokkien and cantonese at home. Whenever im at schl, i tend to let these words seep into my vocabulary and defintely use singlish every now and then. My friends all understand wht i mean when i say it and ive a few close friends who r from malaysia, so they understand it well.
oh and im feeling very nationalistic watching this

And Singapore just aint Chinese english ,Malay and Tamil. Where is The Kristang Language of the Eurasians? The creole Portuguese of the Eurasians has never been mentioned.
