Simulation of Sloshing inside a 0.8 x 0.4 x 0.5 m (L x W x H) rectangular tank using Particleworks (MPS method). Water depth is 0.15 m (18.8% of L, 30% of H). See ref. [1].
Imposed sinusoidal rigid motion for the tank in X direction (lengthwise), with an amplitude of 0.04 m (5% of L), and a frequency of 4.52 Hz. The frequency was estimated a priori as the fundamental sloshing frequency for the given motion parameters and water pool depth.
Excellent agreement with measured data was obtained. The plot represents the total force (pressure + viscous effects) on the internal tank surface in X (longitudinal) direction. The transition from linear to nonlinear behavior is clearly visible. Interestingly, the model predicts that max. pressure/force response occurs between 8 and 10 seconds from the start; subsequently, the calculated & the observed response becomes quasi-periodic, with a somewhat lower amplitude.
The animation represents the evolution of the interpolated liquid surface with time, during the first 12 seconds. The particle size used in the simulation (3.2 mm, 1.47 million particles total) allows for a very detailed capturing of surface features, including splashing and spraying.
