DENVER (CBS4)- Every month, 30,000 families apply for a home loan modification through the federal government. The process is long and often ends unsuccessful.
Two couples in the Denver metro area had been trying for years to get their loans modified. Both were on the verge of foreclosure, but refused to give up.
Charley and Kevin Cross tried for more than two and a half years to get their loan modified to avoid losing their home.
"I made more money, apparently enough to keep the house. They sent us final modification paperwork and they want us to sign it and return and then we can stay here," said Kevin.space Couple Shares Secrets To Success With Home Loan Modification Process
"We're having a little boy in two weeks. This couldn't have come at a better time. It was scary not knowing where to take him if we had no place to go," said Charley.
Juan and Juanita, who didn't want to reveal their last name, also were on the verge of losing their home.
"It means the world to us. We don't have to move toys, stay where they are, no worries anymore," said Juanita.
They were in an adjustable-rate mortgage that threatened to price them out of their family home. They worked with The Haven Group, a team of volunteers that helps struggling homeowners.
Juan and Juanita are also signing the final loan modification papers.
Experts weigh in on what these couples did right to get their loans modified.
- Get the paperwork in on time.
- Make follow up calls to the mortgage company two times per week and talk to a supervisor.
- Document every phone call.
- Put loan number on top of every document faxed.
"That loan number could help determine what pages go in your packet," said one volunteer with The Haven Group. "Do not ever go to a company that charges you a fee. This is something you absolutely can do on your own."
