Why not visit the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and Peak District, from Ashbourne.through the picturesque villages of Bradbourne, Cassington, Wirksworth, Cromford, Visit the Heights of Abraham and Gulliver's Kingdom in Matlock Bath, onto Matlock, then to the Matlock Farm Park. Travel onto Darley Dale, on through the stunning grounds at Chastworth House. Don't forget to drive past the actual house, or actually go inside beautiful stately home. Visit their Garden Centre and Farm Shop. Visit Haddon Hall, Then drive to Bakewell, Ashford in the Water, a quick stop at the historic village of Eyam. Then onto Hathersage, Hope, the stunning scenic views through Edale, drive down stunning Winnats Pass to visit the mines, 'Blue John Cavern' in small picturesque village of Castleton. From there, drive to Chapel en le Frith then onto lovely town of Buxton, before heading back to Ashbourne. One continuous drive with several minor stops should be a very interesting and full trip for you all.

Oh and Zach, I feel your pain in The Shambles but my pain was from negotiating the cobbles and kerbs pushing a wheelchair. Not a problem for Vikings and Romans? x

Met you a couple of weeks ago, lovely famiy (and dog). In the spring the Borders abbeys are worth a visit, especially Dryburgh with the snowdrops and daffodils, Scotts view worth stopping at looking up the glen towards Melrose and Galashiels. Most Borders towns are about 10 miles apart , also the Melrose sevens rugby tournament worth a vist, teams from all over the world. Stay safe, Bob

Anyone know whats going on with how he says his T's most of the time? It's so different to how i usually here Brits say their T's (in the accents/regions that do) or US accents i hear on TV. It kinda seems more pronounced than any. It's not a criticism, just something so different i always notice.

I will tell anyone who listens to me that my DNA tests prove I'm 48% Scottish and only 47% English! The rest is a fight between the Iberians and some random Italian woman who fell in love with my mother's kin in the 1800s. My English side is from Yorkshire and Manchester, but mainly Yorkshire, so this interests me, and I would love to visit. I have to convince the Scottish side that I won't be held captive and I'll return to my homeland soon enough. GREAT video - looks like you really had a great time. I really liked the museums and the fun things you could experience with the kids. I hate that it's so expensive to have fun, but maybe next time. There will be a next time, you can tell by Annie's smile!!

Looks a wonderful place for sure. I always love the medieval and Victorian architecture. Edinburgh itself is steeped in history, different though. Enjoyed the video and looked like yours had a fantastic time. That’s great that you’d have part of your family over as well.

The Romans built a fort here for something like 6,000 soldiers. They called it Eboracum. They had to go back to save Rome, and it wasn't until the 700s that the Vikings came and named it Jorvik, from where we get the name York.
At least, that's what my history lessons say.

Thanks for the wonderful tour of York. My wife, daughter and I went to York and loved it. Inside the Minster was "amazing" and we attended Evensong with organ accompaniment. Consider driving west to Holyhead parking the car there (or drive on the ferry) and take the ferry to Dublin. We are looking forward to a trip Scotland maybe next year including Skye and your videos are giving us some ideas!!

I am so pleased you found York a great place to visit. Unfortunately it is always so busy due to its popularity. I live just a few miles from York but never tire of it when I revisit. Anyone visiting should definitely try to use public transport or the park and ride as it is extremely difficult to park with so many visitors. Looking forward to your next trip!

All the 'gates' in York, like Coppergate, are actually the Norse word for a street. You see a similar number on a street map of Oslo. So Coppergate was the street of the coppersmiths.
I guess our word gate comes from the same idea of a throughway.

If you've not been already, you should definitely go to the Open Air Museum at Beamish in Co. Durham. This large site is surrounded by a traditional tramway, featuring vintage trams and buses you can ride on, plus a short railway; there's an Edwardian High Street with shops and a pub you can go into and have a beer, as well as a bakery selling bread and cakes. As well as this, there is a 1950s town under development, and a Victorian coal-mining village with lots of houses you can go into andn see how people lived then, a chip shop you can order fish & chips from, schools, chapels, halls, a cinema, lots of period entertainments and other contemporary businesses and facilities. Likewise, there are farmsteads and other industrial premises from earlier ages - and a lot more besides. You'll not see it all in a day, but tickets are valid fo a whole year from the date of issue - and it's close enough to drive to, down the A1, etc.

I’m from Glasgow but I lived in York for 2 years. It’s a lovely place, but it’s always packed with tourists so living there is very different and a bit frustrating when it takes ages to get anywhere. I now live in Ayrshire, so recommend you visit the west coast and pop over to Arran. It’s lovely and very child friendly. Also you might want to consider enrolling your youngest in outdoor nursery when she gets to that stage- my grandsons all have gone to outdoor nursery and it’s a great start to their education.

Hi Zack n Annie if you do return to York sometime go off beaten track on outskirts of York is Murton Park it's farming museum it has little vikings village recreation where volunteers are dressed as vikings show u life, also little Roman fortress recreation fun for kids good for you 2 as it's other side of Outer Ring Road.

Positive it's not overrun, in many ways York victim own success especially on a weekend.
As York resident 53 years it best as u found out visit during week.

Hi guys….. pleased you loved York
Having dipped your toes into Yorkshire… you must return and visit some of the old villages that ooze our history
Having relocated back from 40+ years in the NE England, returning to my home county is wonderful
Try Holmfirth, Slaithwaite ( pronounced Slowit) and surrounding areas. It is a glorious county
As I’ve said many times…. if I hadn’t been born in Yorkshire I would want to have been born in Scotland
Just go wider than York…. there is soooo much more
❤️❤️

That’s a shame you have to pay for the interactive kids bit at the railway museum. There used to be a whole section like that that was free with open access whenever it wasn’t in use by school groups. At least the majority of the museum is still free. I’m glad you enjoyed my home town.

One extra tip if you want a ghost dedicated to each of you don't spend time in queue in shambles at the Ghost merchants. Pop round to St Anthonys Garden which courtyard off peasholme green, this main base Ghost Merchants u get more personalised visit plenty time on hands.
Entrance opposite the Black Swan very old Timbered Pub dates from 15th Century lovely retaining it's character throughout, 2nd oldest pub Ye olde Starre Inn off Stonegate which was street u were in Teddy Bear shop a access via alleyway next house of trembling madness.
Best place for Food u really feel like full is The Masons Arms on Fishergate in York.
Same if horse racing on at Knavesmire York can be very busy.
Couple points for quiet weekend 1st weekend of February we hold ICE Sculptures weekend, following Weekend starts Mark full week of Viking Festival biggest of its Kind in Europe.
Lots nice festivals in York visit away from Xmas season.

Just wanted to add that it’s great that you’re respecting your children’s privacy! My wife and I also limit our 2 year old daughter’s face online- even our own Facebook or other social media accounts. We’ve got another little girl on the way and we’re expecting her to arrive sometime at the end of December / early January! We will be respecting her privacy as well ♥️.
Update on our Journey to the UK: after a lot of research, I’ve decided that it’s best not to limit myself to only Scotland on where I would like to move to. Getting a skilled workers visa is tough enough without the added limitations of sticking to one location. After 5 years though, we can apply for the indefinite stay visa and move elsewhere in the UK after that!

As you probably know by now "Bar" means "Gate" and "Gate" means "Road" as it comes from the Old English word "Gatta" which means .... "Road". So "Bargate" means "The road to (or from) the gate".
Confused? You will be! 🙂
