I wish someone could have told Anthony Kenny the Biblical answer about suffering, which theological and philosophical ruminating will never give you. God did not foreordain sin and He does not intend to leave it here very long. The exact reason why He has temporarily allowed it is explainable from the Bible, and it doesn't require any of these crazy theodicies that would have us believe there can't be good without evil or that evil is needed for "soul-building" or whatever.

God's seeing into one's heart so as to know that one is going to sin, does not make God responsible for sin. One might say, responsible for allowing it, but that is because He wants us to make a choice as to whether we will conform to His good purposes or not. The choice determines our eternal destiny. All are going to die as a consequence of the harm brought upon humankind and their environment by the first human couple turning away from God, but God provides for all a life beyond this one. While a tsunami is tragic, ultimately all death is, but the solace is that God provides a future life free from death and sorrow. All thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is simple. Jesus came to save sinners. They who will not admit that they are sinners, do not need Him and He can do nothing for them.

There is, however, only two destinations for mans imortal soul: Heaven or hell.

Admit you are a sinner.

I feel Sir Anthony misunderstands the usage of atheists. One can be an atheist without rejecting all conceivable gods. One can merely not believe in the existence of gods for reasons such as being unconvinced by existing god claims.

I'm an atheist for one and only one reason. All the evidence I've come across for gods....and I've been looking at it hard for close to 15 years now, is not at all convincing. I'm a naturalist in the sense that it's the only game in town. If we were to find a dimension outside of the natural world, I would accept it with no problem. With what we know, I will readily admit that we have an extremely incomplete picture of what can be explained through the natural world by natural processes. Some things in nature may never be explained by humans because of our own limitations. However, since the natural world is all we are aware of, why would any of us jump to a supernatural explanation? I will freely admit that, God as an explanation has always seemed so implausible to me. It's always seemed silly. I'm not trying to insult...it's just the visceral reaction I have. I've felt that way since a kid, sitting in Sunday school. So, what makes you jump to a supernatural explanation of things when we are just scratching the surface in our understanding of the natural world?

TS Eliot was a Universal Christian who converted to Anglicanism while becoming a poet when he moved to England. Then said he became Anglo-Catholic. Lots of vacillation there, but only within Christianity, given his long-lost family lineage had been of the Hindu Brahmin caste.

WH Auden was from a family of Church of England clergymen and was Anglo-Catholic his entire life. He lost most faith at the age of around 13 once he decided to become a poet, and only because of a gradual loss of interest, not through any decisive change in views. He must have gradually been drawn back to his Anglo-Catholic religion because of the aesthetic value to him (having grown up happily with it as a child), I suppose.
