They are not faking it. They are doing something called air playing, that’s where you don’t make any sound but finger through the notes. It’s a form of warming up.

My director would be LIVID if this happened. My director has thrown sticks before and when we get the the band room OMG my director would chew us out! Though I've done this bacause its called warming up, very useful for competitions.

The only logical reasons I can think of as to why they weren’t playing:

- they didn’t warm up
- they didn’t tune
- they didn’t memorize the music
- this was their first time seeing the music
- they were all self conscious of their playing
- none of them want to be in band
