Russian aircraft are testing Japan's territorial perimiter. I don't understand the mindset of a country that is having it's ass kicked by lowly Ukraine, now picking a fight with the 4th or 5th strongest military on earth ? Is it just me ?

Meanwhile Saab is probably looking at constructing a stealth replacement of the Gripen. And it will be cheaper, more adaptable easier to maintain and being able to take of from any reasonably straight piece of road... and control a squadron of drones. Maybe something to take inspiration from... But I guess that is heresy for the US aircraft industry.

Russia has the best model, from drawing board to production to "finished product"... they are trying to build a foundation designed to be upgraded and modified... and lo and behold, this design philosophy is showing impressive results... better to get there a little later and look like your dressed to kill then being early and having one sleeve longer than the other... How do you have a new Century Series with only 3 manufacturers? Especially when one of them is dysfunctional. The Century Series worked because there was an abundance of competition, now there's almost none.

If a con\glomoration between Boeing, Grumman, and Lockheed Martin can throw a plane together with a compressed timeline using CAD and previous experience of building the F22 and F35, they are not trying hard enough.

Very stimulating! I love that term, "non-negligible impact". Is it possible Trump is thinking win-win rather than zero sum gain? That is, Russia gives up total victory and NATO gives up total destruction of Ukraine. I would argue NATO is willing to entertain the total destruction of Ukraine in order to deny it to Russia.

Putin endorsed Harris... Poor move for Vlad... Now Trump is meeting with Zelensky...Probably not good for Vlad... 80 years has taught us that a strong Russia is generally good for nobody... not even Russians most of the time... No one wants to see Russia collapse & its people suffer but if conquest is all they can fixate on, then better a weak broken Russia than one on the war path with its neighbors over territory...

The reason the U.S. built the century series of fighters was that war planners expected either to deter or fight the Soviets in a hot war scenario in the immediate future, within the ten-year timeframe. Eisenhower built the U.S. interstate highways large enough for military aircraft to land if air bases were destroyed by Soviet attack. He privately authorized the storage of chemical weapons in places like Japan. He delegated nuclear launch authority to individuals lower in the chain of command, including General LeMay of the U.S. Strategic Air Command (SAC) and even some colonels in control of air defense nuclear weapons. The Soviets knew that, if they tried anything, they would get as good as they got. That's why we're all still alive.

The same thing is happening again; they are getting ready for another world war.

Let's pray that, as they did in the 50s and 60s, cooler heads will prevail.

Tailless figter is a physics nightmare add stealth to the mix and the juice isnt worth the squeeze

The cheap light fighter in large numbers that is stealth ish is the missing element and the f35 got f111 one for all and all get none treatment
Be on the look out for a rapid response modern militarized x15 to show up in the near future

The US triopoly of aircraft companies has had a very long run and, not surprisingly, has far too much political clout to be fit for a democracy. If any person competing for high office in governance, at any level, has holdings beyond a nominal middle class person amount then he/she should be barred or obliged to fully divest with relevant tax figures being published. It is a matter of conflict of interest.
The awarding of contracts is a matter for actual requirements and should be made by governments and chiefs of staff alongside economists and duly qualified people. Lobbying needs to be added to the list of federal offenses.
The whole "generation" classification has business school written all over it and engenders competition and products resulting from this competition whereas defensive needs in a given nation for the best possible security of the people and tax payers. Governments do not have money of their own, although the USA has long just printed it during the period of US dollar domination.
Your points about delays after approval and spiraling costs needs to end (as far as possible) and when an aircraft/system is presented for use it should be complete, fully tested and ready for action. Evolution from that point will, of course, happen and will require taxpayer funds but not excessively so. E.g. Russia, the UK (with partners), some EU countries and China tend to evolve variants from families of aircraft and the whole "generation" fashion show business is not openly a selling point. Even France -- noted for its independent thinking -- makes fewer types of planes than 50 years ago and has successful partnerships with other states. It was never tempted by the F-35 scam and was right.
Consensus seems to be emerging in advanced countries that manned with unmanned air assets will emerge quite quickly and the very important point you make about pilots will see that traditional role being spread to ground and at sea with fewer people being in the hazardous confines of warplanes.

The USAF has been hiding a LOT of gear since the 1980's! Let's start with the STILLS SECRET 1983-era ECM (Electronic Counter-Measures) all-delta-wing companion aircraft to the F117a, the 1992-era Boranes-powered (aka ZIP-fuel!) "The Green Lady" Hypersonic recon aircraft, the 2003-era low-sonic-boom recon replacement for the Green Lady called "SpearFisher", The 1970's-era-to-today STILL testing/partial operational Pumpkin Seed used-to-PDWE (Pulse Detonation Wave Engine) but is now Scram-Jet with rocket-assist spaceplane, the 1988-era Huuuuuuuuuge SR-75 carrier craft (aka Brilliant Buzzard) with the parasitic low-orbit spaceplane, the 1990's successor to the 1970's-era Copper Canyon TSTO (Two-Stage-To-orbit) space shuttle replacement, NGAD, The electrostatics-propulsion-based Pill-Shaped Drone Aircraft, Astra/Locust/TR3b on-board Cyclotron/HFGW/MFGW-GWASER-based propulsion deep-black flying triangles and we might as well talk about the deep-space-capable "Giant Flying Propane Tanks"!

There! Is that enough deep-contractor-spilled-Secrets for ya!

Here is a train of thought. Take a small portion of every countries defence budget, and help the poorest people working, I'll or disabled in its country. Take a little larger percentage to supply clean water, and cheap heating and electricity.
And much of the world's demand for advanced military equipment would fade. I'm sure of it.

I think this "light" fighter and NGAD are the same thing.
The fastest way to advance is to get away from the endless "mission creep". NGAD will be highly specialised like the F-117 and not built in huge number probably by Skunkworks. I think the "light" refers to the number of mission types it is expected to do.

It is mindboggling to me that people think that you can just decide to win a war any time you want. The Ukraine has lost this war already. There is no "winning," if you mean "Ukraine getting all its territory back." That ship sailed in 2023, now Russia is decimating Ukraine and the only choice left is whether to negotiate surrender terms or whether to send NATO troops and use nuclear weapons.
