Black Student Enrollment Up at Medical Schools Across America

Medical schools made changes to their admissions process, including waiving application fees and interviewing candidates remotely. Some of these factors were a benefit to Black applicants.

More Black students are enrolling in medical school, making this year's class more diverse than any before it. This year, more than 2,100 Black students started their medical school journey.

Admissions counselors can't pinpoint only one factor for the increase. Instead, it has been a combination of factors, from the pandemic to social justice issues, which were brought to the forefront in 2020.
