The tariffs are not about bring back manufacturing or anything like that its about tanking the Chinese economy the usa is their largest consumer has been for decades and it has made them go from a 3rd world country to a peer wouldnt say near equal or the likes but they are trying to be. Now they need to hit them back down a bit and remind them of their place in the world without going to war, so how do you do it you tax the hell out of their goods coming to your country so the nikes and apples of the world move their business out of china to say Vietnam or thailand which have way way less in the tariffs and are more friendly to the USA boosting their economy strengthening that relationship with you in those key area's and pushing your enemy's economy down so they cant go to war.
