'Papa Hadyn'
You took me for
A long walk
When no one else
Could find the time.
I put mud
In your pockets,
And you called it
An Anti-crime.
I helped you
Wash and dry the dishes,
And you helped me
Make a mess.
You told me
A story whenever
I needed one
Without duress.
And if our time together
Could last forever,
I'd say, "Wonderful!"
I'd enjoy another
Long walk with you.
You grew strawberries
And red poppies
In your garden.
-Silver dollars
And a Bartlett pear tree.
I ate most of your fruit,
But you still hugged me.
You had a car
Named 'Junior,'
And you'd take me out
For a ride.
But most of all
I loved our walks together
In the woods
Without the concrete-asphalt side.
And if our time together
Could last forever,
I'd say, "Wonderful!"
I'd enjoy another
Long walk with you.
You taught me
How to find
The ripe blackberries
Among the thorns.
And you taught me
How to weed a garden
And hum while planting
Peas and corn.
We fed
Carrot pieces to the horses
And biscuits to the Bassett Beagle Hound
-Sunflower seed
To the wild birds
And listened to
The tree frogs resound.
And if our time together
Could last forever,
I'd say, "Wonderful!"
I'd enjoy another
Long walk with you.
