If I ever have the pleasure of meeting you in person & hearing a story told by you...that'll be a d4mn good night indeed. I genuinely enjoyed this story of the SAS from you. I'm actually watching the new show, "ROGUE HEROES" on EPIX Channel right now, & it totally amazes me the accuracy of the men & stories you've told. Truly awesome 👍

If you get a chance, watch that show. ("ROGUE HEROES") I think you'll rather enjoy it. And the actor that plays 'Patty'... absolutely does a fantastic job on his character. He's my favorite.

During WW2 my uncle was a football player for our Town, called up he became a physical training instructor. After the war he told me soldiers in training under him would be recommended for the newly formed parachute regiment. Uncle was a bit of a hard man and I recall him having bare knuckle fights after the war, he told me the ones selected were "The real deal" and no doubt some would have ended up with Colone Paddy Maine. Many years later he was throwing out an old battle dress with wings, he himself had been a para and he never told us.

if they immediately realized parachuting in was no good then why call it Special AIR Services? I just watched the show and it seems like the name just stuck? is that really true?

I doubt very highly that naming units things like L detachment actually lead to the germans believing that there were detatchments A-K, as many people claim. But rather it prevented the germans from gaining knowledge about the numbers of units from the names.

Stirling volunteered for No. 8 (Guards) Commando. He was a commando not just a Scots Guard. The original idea was that of Dudley Clarke. I would suggest you do some more research prior to making incorrect statements.

to be fair to the italians, none of them understand each other bc they prefer their dialects to "official" italian, if these guys ran into say, napolitans, and the fellow spoke something similar to italian from the toscana, the other guys would think "god, posh pricks" and keep walking

They were not Royal Marine Commandos they were Army Commandos, Royal Marines were brought into the Commandos in 1943. From 1940 Churchill's Commandos were all volunteers from Army Regiments and from Countries which have been invaded by the Nazis. My Late Grandfather was in 1 Commando formerly First Special Service Brigade SOE Commando .

Accordions and volleyball nets are unacceptable.

Conforming to the norm of society is not always what is needed when you're fighting. Churchill, Stirling and Turing. Unfortunately not always a happy ending.

The Long Range Desert Group had already been carrying out long range recon and depot destroy missions way before Sterling decided to rebrand the LRDG as his own. As the LRDG was full of New Zealanders, the early SAS took on board many of the traits that the LRDG had ie wear no insignia, jeeps and the ability to repair their own vehicles and gear.

Overall, not a bad analysis. However, it does perpetuate the myth that David Stirling was so much greater than the catalyst for the formation of the regiment. The LRDG had conducted airstrip raids behind enemy lines before the regiment was even formed. Luckily, Stirling, being a toff, was well connected. Auchinleck and Stirling were from within the same social circle. Had anyone else come up with the idea, it is debatable that the regiment would ever have been formed. Gavin Mortimer's book, The Phony Major, IMHO provides a much more balanced view, taken from sources within the regiment's 'other ranks', not just the officers selected using the 'old school tie' (like Randolph Churchill, who was inept at best) method that Stirling favoured. The book also paints a rather more balanced account of Paddy Mayne, who, although he was something of a rough diamond, was a brilliant tactician, and, it could be argued, that after Stirling was captured (taking an ill-advised jaunt) in 1943, the regiment was better led, and substantially more successful. Mayne's superiors, of course, resented the insubordinate Irish upstart, but he was such a good leader, that there was little they could do about it, other than perhaps downgrade his well-deserved recommendation for a VC.
