Well Trump said no income tax for all, and 15% for corporations. Tax shortage will be made up by extra sales tax since people will spend more as they save more from reduced tax. Business will being back jobs and manufacturing to the US? How does it transfer to more tax income for the government if businesses do as what you ask them to do by bringing business back to US to avoid traiffs?

Not only will it increase the price of many of the base food products (fruits, vegetables, meats) but it will also increase the price of many end products (TV dinners, frozen microwaveable meals, boxed meals, pizzas, etc.) that rely on the base product to make the end product. Just like with the cars that are often made with imported parts, many food products are made with imported ingredients.

Another thing that's not talked sbout much is Trump thinking that the tariffs will force manufacturers to build in the U.S. They won't do that because if an item cost $1 to be made in Mexico or Canada, the reason it's being made there is because it cost $2 to be made here (I'm making up numbers to use as an example). It's still cheaper to be made in Mexico or Canada at $1.25 but the consumer will pay the extra. Now, they could have the item made in Bangladesh or something wher lenit only cost $1.05 but now Bangladesh (and everywhere else) will raise the manufacturing cost to something that's still cheaper then $1.25 but more than the $1.05. No matter where it's made, it'll be more expensive than what it was. Now, that's only an item that cost $1 to manyfacture. That doesn't include the the actual cost of the item, which eill be added to the manufacturing cost. A $10 item will be $12.50. A $100 item will be $125. A $50,000 item will be $62,500. A home that uses $100,000 in imported materials will cost an additional $25,000 of those materials come from Mexico or Canada. Other countries will raise their prices not out of necessity but because they can.

My family farms, we haven't turned a decent profit in years due to outsourced goods from other countries. Why are we so reliant to other countries for our goods? Keep it in America. We can make ANYTHING we need. No need to outsource. Thats what tariffs are for. Make goods and employ Americans for America. NOT make other countries money while we suffer.

I have listened for years to arguments about the destructive power of unequal exchange. Unequal exchange factually also destroys the USA, it created the rust belt, and suppressed wage growth. So here I am dumbfounded when a political party (who is otherwise absolutely horrifying) proposes a tax on imports to make it more cost effective to pay a person in the USA a living wage to make those things and the left wing is against it? Are you for cheap crap made by foreign slaves or aren't you? Either you are or you aren't. None of this wishy washy crap, pick one. Do you want Americans who have wage and workplace protections to make that stuff or do you want it to go to someone working in slave like conditions? You have to pick one.

The point of tariffs in the long run is import substitution. To make it less expensive to produce the items locally than import them, this employs people reducing the unemployment rate, which drives wages up, which means the average person gets wealthier which is why... every industrialized society got there through state directed industrial policy and protectionist tariffs.

Now what Trump is doing with Mexico isn't likely protectionist tariffs Considering he negotiated NAFTA 2 which every one of his business buddies loves... It's likely a negotiating tactic to get political concessions on controlling the border and the crisis of illicit substance smuggling.

I've said this a lot over the last few years, but this problem of ignorance and failure in critical thinking is a problem fostered by the Republican party of the 1980s. Reagan's administration had the opportunity to make college free and invest in education, but they did not want Americans to be smart enough to see through their BS. They knew if we got too smart, we wouldn't vote for them. So they set us up to fail, and they are reaping the benefits 40 years later.
