That`s great you finally got your Tunnel built. Was talked about long enough, and all the dignatery`s are all happy now.
I retired from Caltrans back in 2006, and funny all the bickering and negative that kept get slung around back then. Typical government.
After all the years of setting aside Bicycle lanes, you still need to paint a stencil to tell them which side to ride on and an Arrow to tell which direction to go. When are bicycles going to be taxed a Road Tax? They need to pay their fair share.
Cost millions to build the tunnel, now millions to maintain the Bicycle lane. It will eventually fall into the Ocean and or slides onto the road.

Bravo CalTrans! Excellent documentary explaining the complexities, community engagement, and the process of continuous improvement. You all have raised the bar for public entities, fulfilling their various missions for the public good. Thank you!

Did my tax dollars go to make this video? Why? Watch and listen closely. We could have built it in the '70s but it would have been too expensive. We had to wait 40 years so added regulations would cost us more. If you read between the lines this could be seen as another example of bureaucracy at its worst.

Good to see our old friend the felon Leland Yee there. I hope you were able to get a good chunk of this money for your racketeering, money laundering, and gun running schemes. There was probably plenty to go around.

I like the guy painting the rocks. They look so real!

Why does 380 westbound from the airport go slightly beyond 280 where it intersects and then a portion of 380 heads directly into the side of the mountain at this spot and completely dead ends? Was there a plan at one time to also build a tunnel extending 380 westbound through the mountain and to connect along the coast with CA 1 but was never undertaken? I always wondered about why 380 did not simply intersect with 280 but had that tiny segment go toward the mountain, as if to enter a tunnel at that spot. It even looks like that would be the spot a tunnel would have begun. Does someone on Caltran know why?

The best thing about this project is that they turned to old Devil's Slide alignment into a pedestrian trail. It's awesome (though parking is a bitch). The veiws are spectacular.

Just so people know, the tunnels opened in 2013, over a decade ago. This is not "new" news. It is cool seeing some of the work being done though. Would love to see a more detailed documentary of the construction process.

Hwy 1 was subsidized by the State & Federal Govt since it's conception. Those "communities" were tourist traps and still are. So once again, all of America I paying to realign Hwy 1 AWAY from the coast and subsidizing a bike trail.

The part of Highway 1 that is bypassed by the tunnel is now a recreational trail. I have walked it too many times to count. It is so steep in parts--up to a 9% grade if I remember correctly.

I was a Coastside resident and drove that treacherous stretch of dark, twisting two-lane road thousands of nights over my eight years of living in Half Moon Bay. The 1980s were wet years and we Coastsiders experienced a half-dozen closures of the Slide, along with closures of the main road east, Cal 92 "over-the-hill" to San Mateo.

Two of our three sons were born during that period of my life, and with simultaneous closures of both Highways 1 and 92, the isolation of Coastside families from a full-time medical facility was a terrifying prospect.

I'll likely never have an opportunity to travel that familiar route again, this time through your beautiful tunnel, but I congratulate the determination of Coastside residents for finally building this safe and reliable access to and from your communities.

It took longer to bicker about the tunnel, construction methods, and get funding (took 10 years if I recall) than it took to actually build it.

I thought this tunnel would NEVER get built.
I first heard about devils slide way back in 1983 when I was a 12 yr old 5th grader.
Through the years I heard the same debate; tunnel or not which led me to believe this wouldn’t ever happen.
Still amazed every time I ride my motorcycle through that tunnel.

The reality is Highway 1 should never have been built. It's as if there was a decision not to believe the ocean will eventually eat away the coastline as it always has. Now billions of California taxpayer dollars have to be used to maintain it.

You know you fix all this. You tell the regulators to go bye-bye we don't need you. You're not welcome in California if destroyed, the state of California destroyed my home and you build it and you build it right the first time and you tell him we're not giving you any more money. We're going to build it at a cost. It's affordable for all California

Screw all those stupid environmental regulations, mitigation...for the good of the project. One time exceptions. It's amazing ANYTHING can get built is California anymore. What would have been a 35 million dollar project would have cost 175 million by the time all the fees, study's, impact reports... are paid for. Sounds like job security to me. California is OVER REGULAED. STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCTATS. They are killing the state with taxes, and regulations. NEWSOM TERMS OUT IN 28. Time to vote for a REPUBLICAN FOR A POSITIVE CHANGE.

I miss Devil's Slide. As you come out of Pacifica heading South, I loved the view you got just as you crested the top and turned to the Left, and there in front, below, and to both sides was The Pacific Ocean in all of it's Glory.
Granted that the tunnel was needed, but that run has never been the same since they built it.
Still, Well Done CalTrans.
