Shogun was the best LH in the world until Jon Jones took his title

His 2005 pride Grand Prix run is the most impressive run climb to the title ever IMO.

Shogun was the best LH in the world for about a year before the MW GP and up until Jones beat him. Even losing to Forrest he was having severe knee issues and needed surgery but didn’t want to pull out because he needed the money. He was a better fighter than griffin. But he clearly showed just how good he was when he thrashed through the division after that. Will always love shogun. He was always willing to die in the cage. In my mind he’s the second best LH of all time.

Shogun’s resume is better than Jon Jones and it’s not even close. UFC, Joe Rogan, and millennials are desperate to hype their guys as “the goat”.

My opinion if him was kind of opposite. Wasn't a fan of his after a few of those kicks to the head. I get they were legal, if the opponent is defending himself and you're jumping into them and stomping that's one thing. But he had too many kicks where the opponent was barely conscious, on their knees and hands/elbows, and he's teeing off and punting the dudes head. Classless in my opinion. He redeemed himself in the UFC and obviously was always a brawler but can't erase that part.

The first fight with Machida was close, but Shogu won IMO...the bad thing for Shogun was that you either have to KO or make it abundantly clear you beat the champion to dethrone them.

Shogun was already worn out and injured by the time he was in the UFC. That’s why he needed two knee surgeries almost immediately.
And he still managed to beat Machida and win the belt.

Before I say this just know I'm a huge shogun fan and he's been my all time favorite fighter.....
He never was talented, he was only skilled with lots of heart, that and being the most advanced MMA style of muay thai and BJJ- pushed him to the top of PRIDE. Muay thai was new to mma with the only fighters using it, being the best fighters in pride, wanderlei silva, shogun, Anderson silva, they reigned as Champs because of muay thai at that time of mma.
I think he never learned anything new, until Freddie Roach trained him in boxing at the end of his career.
He would've been way better if he had done so earlier in his career.
Its like he was taught muay thai but never the when amd why to throw the strikes as he fought most of the time like a brawler, amazingly enough he didn't know how to punch correctly 😅 but that didn't stop him from knockouts.
With all that said, if he would have leveled up his techniques mid career and had a bit more "talent". He would've been nearly undefeated and could have possibly had an even chance of beating Jon Jones.

Most of Shogun's moves and signature techniques are banned in UFC so it's hard for a guy who perfected a technique that was allowed in pride but banned in UFC to revert to a new style. I have a feeling that's why he had as many losses as he did.

The brightest star burn out the fastest.

This man's prime in PRIDE was the stuff of legends, outside the freak injury against Mark Coleman the man was untouchable against the best 205ers in the world.

Would have loved to see that version of Shogun vs Jones. The spectre that Jones beat up wasn't even 25% of the berserker that PRIDE Shogun was.
