An enthralling dive into a pivotal moment of naval history! This video brought to life the courage and sacrifice of sailors in the Pacific Theater.

I've never heard such a vivid narrative of ANY surface action. A truly nightmare scenario, and a testament to the devastating effect of the big naval guns of the era

As if the Americans are the underdog, it never was. The Americans has all the advantage which started in 1916.

"Japanese Were Shocked To See Americans At Guadalcanal" I love the title. From what I read, the Nips were absolutely flabbergasted that the Americans went on the offensive a mere 9 months after the war started. They were in such a state of disbelief that it wasn't after a couple of "send a squad to route the battalion there" failures to dislodge the Yanks there, that they finally realized that they would have to do some actual work, and send in large numbers of troops. It got so bad that the Navy had to ask the army for help, and in the Japanese Imperial Military with the army and navy hating each other, asking the army for help was HUGE!!!!!!

Imagine Archie Bunker or George Jefferson asking each other for help or advice, it was like that. 🤣🤣🤣

Halsey wore himself out from not sleeping and made mistakes. People always talk bad about him but yes he blundered a few times but was older than dirt and never slept.

James Cagney's best work has to be playing Halsey in "The Gallant Hours."

I remember a comment in an earlier narrative about Midway which led me think to Guadalcanal. After losing 4 fleet carriers, Yamato was asjed to attack Midway with his surface ships. He declibed the requested action. "That," he allegedly said, "would violate a rule of Naval warfare." He had in his fleet the same marines who later landed at Guadalcanal. Perhaps, that violated the rule, but so did the Americans. Midway was beyond the logistical reach of the IJN. Guadalcanal was much the same for the USN.

Speed of light versus the speed of sound. Imagine watching this battle from a distance...seeing the flash and then a delay of hearing the sound of the shot or the sound of impact. Like a fireworks show but much deadlier. Just so hard to imagine.

Callahan should have been demerited for rather poor leadership. His destroyers should launched torpedoes at max range (probably ineffectively but…) and then backed off to max firing range and picked at the first or smallest targets, while the big cruisers took on the largest targets and the smaller cruisers picked on light cruisers first and then bigger cruisers. The long lances would have probably taken out several IJN cruisers and destroyers when exploded by shell fire.

Iron bottom Sound has over 20 ships sunk in it from each side. It was a slug fest spread out over six months. It is hallowed ground, just like Gettysburg.

More American sailors were killed at Guadalcanal than American Marines and soldiers.

The Evil Military Government of Japan completely misjudged the fighting spirit of the USA. Someone had seen our Infantry training with wooden guns and decided we we would be an easy victim of their imperial expansion, so they attacked Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, the Aleutians and some other Pacific territories. It was a fatal mistake for many of them. Those that fought died in battle, and those who ordered the war crimes were hung afterward.

Hawaiians were shocked to see American immigrants taking over the Republic.
So much so, they revolted when said immigrants tried to make it a state and a civil war ensued.

My father was a quartermaster aboard the USS Obannon that day. He described this action to me when I was a kid. I also saw what is left of San Fransisco's Bridge out there by Seal Rock.
