So Rerez... it's been quite a while since we've gotten a Just Bad Games entry. I would help out in providing detailed info on some games that had a legendary run and then capped off with a poor entry. Such is the state of the iconic Silent Hill franchise from Konami. I'm splitting my comment into two parts, so forgive me if I double post.
You've done a previous Konami entry before, Snake's Revenge. But my next suggestion will be a two-for-one Just Bad Games premiere, as the Silent Hill franchise had some good things going for it... and Konami blew it, big time. Since October's fast approaching, and with that comes the month of macabre, it feels fitting to try out two of the worst Silent Hill games that exist as of this writing. Keep in mind this is only for mainline-based games, not the garbage pachinko machines. For the new episode of JBG, we're going to shed some light on two notably awful Silent Hill titles, both released one week apart in March of 2012 (no, the Vita-exclusive Book of Memories doesn't count).
Silent Hill is first and foremost among the pioneers of the survival horror genre alongside Resident Evil, and when the first entry landed on Sony's PlayStation in 1999, it was a sleeper hit. Team Silent, the developer, made the first four main entries of Silent Hill, all critically acclaimed and well-loved. With the dissolution of Team Silent, Konami had to find someone else to work on Homecoming, the fifth entry in the SH franchise. California-based developer Double Helix carried out the project and Silent Hill: Homecoming, the first western-made Silent Hill for HD consoles, released in November 2008 to middling reviews. After DH left to produce other games, including the vaunted G.I. Joe game, Konami was left without another developer, and had to cast around the world for a suitable developer to shepherd the next entry of the Silent Hill franchise. They found their team, and they were entrusted to build the next Silent Hill, now called Downpour. That would be the Brno, Czechia-based Vatra Games.
The first entry you'll tackle is Silent Hill: Downpour, farmed out to a low-rate Czech studio called Vatra Games and released exclusively to the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Downpour may not have been terrible in most regards, but the troubled production, marketing blunders, its budget and overall place in the video gaming market did just that. To fans of the Silent Hill ethos, it's a slapdash insult to the franchise, and this is just the beginning of the downfall of Konami's long-running survival horror darling. You could chalk up the blame with various problems within Downpour such as, but are not limited to: The game's main character, Murphy Pendleton - a convicted criminal of all people, the use of Unreal Engine 3 to build the game's world and overall scope, inconsistent framerates, murky visuals, collision issues, the loss of the game franchise's score due to beloved composer Akira Yamaoka not contributing, Korn (yes, this hard rock band from the 1990s was chosen to do the theme song and it plays on the main menu), a disjointed story and worst of all, a distinct lack of monster variety and design. The game was supposed to come out in October 2011, but Konami wound up delaying it for unspecified reasons. Once Downpour was fully shipped out to stores on March 13, 2012, neither fans nor reviewers were happy with the end product. The game's mediocre reception upon release, made worse with debillitating bugs and technical issues that plauged both the PS3 and 360 versions, made it the weakest Silent Hill entry and would be the the series' death knell. A patch to resolve most of the issues didn't come out until November and a proposed DLC (Anne's Story) was canceled and made into a comic - which did not come out until 2015.
As with games getting poor reception upon release, it was bound to be Vatra's last game. The Czech studio declared bankruptcy in September 2012 as Konami didn't renew their contract with new projects to keep them afloat, and the owners, Kuju Entertainment, threw them under the bus a month prior. The patch they did to Downpour was the very last thing they did before the doors closed on them.
To summarize, SH: Downpour is not the worst entry, but it's the weakest, most forgettable entry that no one would be interested in, unless if you're willing to partake in it.
Part 1 of 2
Continuation of previous post/suggestion
However, the special honor of awful would be the next entry, which is one of the absolute worst ways to remaster two beloved classics. I present to you...
Silent Hill: HD Collection is a compilation of two critically-lauded Silent Hill entries 2 and 3, developed by Hijinx Studios and published by Konami, and released to the Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 20, 2012. Before trekking the deadly waters of this shoddy, broken port, I would recommend searching for a copy of the original SH2 and SH3 games (if you haven't owned them already) to compare, because the differences are very significant. First, some context.
Silent Hill 2 and 3, released in 2001 and 2003, respectively, were regarded as legendary entries to the Silent Hill franchise, and to this day, these original games still hold up well. In the 2010s, the trend of remastering old games in general started making steady inroads to the gaming space and Konami were among the first in line to receive such remasters. The critical and commercial success of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, handled by Bluepoint, prompted Konami to have the same HD treatment to the venerated Silent Hill franchise. They hired a developer from California, Hijinx Studios, to handle the HD collection of Silent Hill, which would cover the second and third entries. This is where the seeds of disaster began.
Hijinx had no experience working on any other games aside from largely forgettable karaoke games, and this would prove to be a Herculean task. What's worse is that Team Silent, who shepherded the four entries of Silent Hill were disbanded in the mid-2000s, and is largely the source of the problem you see here. So what the heck happened?
Everything. Konami lost and/or tossed away the source code for the final builds of both Silent Hill 2 and 3. Not making this up at all. What Konami gave to Hijinx to remaster these two classics were unfinished code that wasn't final due to poor archiving, and developer had no choice in the matter and was forced to develop and remaster two beloved classics with unfinished code - an obvious beta if you will. Both of them are completable, sure, but they were riddled with bugs, glitches and all kinds of instability, audio issues, missing textures and just about everything you can think about when it comes to an unfinished, early access game.
Hijinx had to plug away whatever they can and had to do way more work, especially since they were inexperienced and, as mentioned before, had no experience working on any other game of this caliber. They also had to deal with audio problems which, again, wasn't an easy task, and of course, they had to make new voiceovers for Silent Hill 2 with Troy Baker voicing James (the protagonist of SH2) at the helm. There was no option of having the original voiceovers of SH3 either as Konami has apparently lost the original recordings of that game. They also couldn't edit the subtitles as they were hard-coded within the game.
The game came out the week after Downpour, and fans were VERY unhappy. The first thing you'll notice is scaled-back fog, choppy framerates, ugly textures, crashes, and busted sound effects are all the signs of a bad remaster, and this collection suffers from it as-is. These ports were worse than the original versions and the fact that this was rushed out quickly meant that these problems were never fixed. A patch was made to alleviate some of the issues.... but only on the PS3. The Xbox 360 ended up getting no patches making it the worst version of the HD collection. Heck, this game somehow made its way as a backwards compatible title on the Xbox One - the same one on the 360 which had their patches canceled.
Hijinx Studios closed their doors mere days after this game came out. Of the three lackluster Silent Hill trio of games that came out in 2012, only WayForward, the developer of the aforementioned Vita-exclusive Book of Memories survived this moshpit of bad Silent Hill games. And here's the addendum to make the outro: Did you know that Konami had plans to reboot the Silent Hill franchise in the mid-2010s, alongside a demo called P.T., to boot? The reboot, called Silent Hills, helmed by Hideo Kojima (yes, the head of MGS), Guilermo del Toro and Junji Ito, was canceled in 2015, leading to Kojima's departure from Konami. Yes, we know the whole story. And yes, you cannot get P.T. anymore as it was scrubbed off the PS4 permanently within a few months after it was out (and by the way, any efforts to get the P.T. demo back including a mod to play it on PCs were shuttered too!). Very sad indeed.
I've done my research for these games. Now, it's up to you to see if they're just bad games. You're welcome.
Part 2 of 2
in your next its just bad vidio do secret agent clank for psp
ОтветитьI hope he knows about The Neverhood, one of the strangest games I've seen in a while.
Ответитьextremely confusing title but an awesome video!
ОтветитьFor your consideration, Bloodwings: Pumpkinhead's Revenge, a first person dungeon crawler based on a poor sequel to an actually decent horror classic that will absolutely baffle and confuse you when it's not trying to screw you over for trying to interact with the game.
Hell hath no fury like desciphering what they mean by Stolen Objects on your first playthrough.
This doesn't even deserve an abbreviation.
OH MY GOD!!!!
WHAT THE HELL!!!!
This video gives me big SCP vibes and i kind of like it
Ответитьcould you do a history video on jungletac? (the company that made most of those bootleg games you played)
Ответитьi have seen white marker/highlighter/whiteout graffiti several times through my whole life.
ОтветитьWhen will Just Bad Games return, because I still think Shane and Adam should do an episode on Enchanted Portals. Or heck, how about on the 4V4 Online Multiplayer Shooter game for the PS4 and PS5 Foamstars, that is basically Splatoon at home.
ОтветитьWell we’re not into NEC PC-98 game territory yet but we’re getting dangerously close.
ОтветитьWait was adam the other tester
Ответитьhow come i only got notified now about this gem? 😭
ОтветитьLeno was the face of Doritos for at least a year or two. Wasn't just one ad, there was a TON of them. At the time (this was before his late night show), it was probably what he was most broadly known for "crunch all you want, we'll make more!"
ОтветитьFunny, unrelated sidenote: the Grateful Dead once preformed a song called "Don't Quit Your Day Job" in the '80s during live shows. They stopped playing it because their fans overwhelmingly hated it. Just a coincidence, I'm sure...
ОтветитьWant some more of this
ОтветитьLike the outro always says "IT'S JUST BAD!!" Holy hell what did I just watch for almost a half-hour and my brain starting with all those very bad jokes and weak humor 🙃
ОтветитьI only became aware of this from the most recent upload. This format is great!
ОтветитьI’m a person who laugh easily i mean grown man laughing at dumb jokes
But stand ups just make me feel pain and i hate laughing track
"What do they call the phone company in Mexico? Taco Bell." That's such an old joke I have no idea how Shane doesn't know the answer.
ОтветитьPlumbers don't wear ties is going to show up on this series, isn't it? And/or Fox hunt.
Ответить-.- IT'S TACOBELL... heh overthinking it. went back to when the question was first asked and got it right away. heh go me :P
ОтветитьI cringed and groaned my way through this video. But watching Rerez play this made it possible to continue.
ОтветитьShane trying to figure out who this game is made for
"This recording will make a rude noise" ...*fart*
Me: "..heh.. oh god its made for me?"
Next, N.O.B!
Ответитьonly like 5 minutes in and I'm already loving this format
ОтветитьCould you rewiev also a game of the building strategy genre like civilization or city skylines but in wierd/bad?
ОтветитьThe funniest thing I got from this video is I'm pretty sure Shane Luis has latino ancestry, yet doesn't know Spanish.
ОтветитьI gotta admit "when i first met gupta he would only speak in his native language hindi so i told him gupta youre in america speak spanish" got a nose exhale from me
Ответитьhonestly i'm just kinda mad they forgot to count the laugh he had the first time he was in hell.
Ответить
