Nasser - From Pan-Arab Dream to National Disaster | History Documentary

Watch 'Robert F. Kennedy - America's Lost President' here: https://youtu.be/BZ8FGhabafs

This documentary paints a nuanced portrait of the charismatic President Nasser. In 1952, as an unknown young Egyptian colonel, Nasser led a coup that became a revolution. Over the next 18 years Nasser emerged as a titanic figure, and as a champion of Arab progress and African liberation. But what he could not offer was democracy; instead, he established the region's first and much emulated military authoritarian regime. A man of enormous charisma and ambition, Nasser became caught in the coils of his own power, dying in 1970 of a heart attack at just 52 years old, with many dreams unrealized.

Using numerous eyewitness accounts, it retraces the great battles that were Nasser’s, from the economic development of Egypt to the unfulfilled dream of a great union of Arab nations.

My feeling is that Nasser felt threatened by an Israel backed by the powerful US, and thus he took a very belligerent stance against both of them. I think the US should have taken a neutral stance with Israel and Egypt, and lent money to Egypt when Nasser requested it. That would have defused the tension which finally exploded in the 1967 Six Days War.
I find myself cheering for Nasser throughout this story. He was a patriot and a moral figure.

You forgot to mention 2 two very important points 1) there was a war of attrition waged by Egypt and lead by Jamal Abdul al Nasser against the Israeli army between 1967 and 1970 and at least 1000 one thousand Israeli soldiers were killed and at least 10000 ten thousands Egyptians were killed by Israeli air raids many Egyptian civilians were killed 2) tens of thousands of Egyptian soldiers were slaughtered and killed in Yemen before 1967 during the Yemeni civil war.

My heart goes to to Cuba whenever Arab issues are mentioned,,They managed to defend themselves from invasions ,,attempted assassinations with little help from Soviets,From the beginning the Arabs lucked vision coherent Arab unity ,,military discipline as proven over the years,One Egyptian _Israeli war that comes to mind is the six day war where the Israelis bombed their entire mig jets onthe ground while the generals were parting in “preparation “ to attack Israel,,,,,

The British troops and their families were made refugees by Nasser and had to flee to Cyprus. Biggest mistake Greeks ever did was help the British and feed them and give them water, [ etc ].
The US and the UK toppled so many governments. British government still think they own the Ionian Islands. British government still think they own the Cyprus. And the British government still think they even own the Looted Parthenon Sculptures. Well, maybe that's how they do things in Britain - they've got that royal family n all kinds of problems, but this is the Hellenic Republic.

I don't care what people say in the comments below. This was a documentary true to its subject. Nasser gave Egypt back to the Arabs who were the majority of the population. He sent all the poor children to school including the peasant children both boys and girls. He gave them shoes to wear and the women under his regime did not have to cover their heads. The biggest mistake he did was to confiscate businesses that was the livelihood of Egypt and the Aswan damn has proved to be an ecological disaster. Since the beginning the River Nile flooded the Delta bringing with it thick mud of untold goodness. Peasants did not need to fertilise their land. Today the food does not taste the same plus there is hardly any fish left in the Nile. Secondly dividing the land amongst the peasants was also unthoughtful. He should have created cooperatives so that the fellahin would work together rather than carry their burden on their own. He was a dictator for sure. But during the 60s the doors were opened and those who wanted left. I have a mixed feelings about this leader.

Mohammad Mossadegh in Iran was actually the first prime minister/leader in the Middle East who stood up against the imperialists and nationalized Iran's oil industry in 1951. In 1953, the British and the US joined forces and did a coup d'état against him he got arrested. But Mossadegh's defiance probably inspired Nasser.

Arabs, have armies to protect and to serve the regimes only. Arabs are very good in fighting each other never a foreign adversary. As for Naser, he lied to King Hussain by telling him that Egypt has destroyed 80% of the Israeli Air force in the six days war, when the opposite was correct, the few aircrafts that managed to take off were shot out of the sky and the rest of the Egyptian air force were burning on ground., and the Egyptian soldiers took off their shoes and ran towards the Suez Canal. King Hussain believed Naser and started using his limited air force to attack Israel during which Jordan lost every single aircraft they had. As for the Golan heights it is a long story. Israel defeated Egypt in 4 days Jordan in few hours and Syria in a day or two. It is a shameful history of the Arabs armies.

Unfortunately thw time was seen that nassar arabs were hurting Palestine arabs and that marouk and usa rejected the full idea of the named republic of .. because said abyse and control. Marouk was said rejecting social oil deal intent when others were not getting pah. He was fred sales agreement if and they wsnted it under full control. The time gadaffi mentioned capitalism sales and events that could start trades they were in crowd looking for kidnapping victime and some of the others . Not gadafgi alone or as but as other. Only seen in sleep and was correct, how we know..elizabutch named as from repeated of child . Yes it's true..but whoever was army in oalestine also was going forth then . No chance to reconcile until later ..they hurt those people imo. Even Egyptian caring for them . Something only politics and money incurred.
