Could not agree with you more proper solder and a good iron makes a huge differance. Both of mine are pants (thats what im blaming anyway!!). PS dont forget to use heat sinks.

Do not buy solder in a hobby shop. Buy it at your local hardware store.

Nope........I had a lead free solder that had a flux core, but it was horrible.

Yeah, I've had the real inexpensive wellers before, but without the right technique, the soldering iron is useless! The one I use now retails for like $30

Maybe outside of California...........all the hardware stores in CA can't sell solder with lead. I guess hobby shops have different rules though

Do yourself a favor and ditch that iron for a better unit; minimum 40W. An adjustable station is worth the investment.

The ironic thing is my previous iron was a 40w weller! I bought this (in the video) iron, as it uses only 18w of power to produce a steady 900 degrees of heat. The iron is actually pretty impressive for $30. I'm sure that a nice Trac-Power would be great, but I'd rather spend that $70-$80 on RC since this iron is doing pretty decent for me.

Nice tutorial, also if you do not have a lighter or heat gun around i just hover my soldering tip around the heat shrink for a few seconds and it works great.

A cheaper alternative to buying solder at yourLHS is to check out your local Rat Shack.

Any "electrical" solder will do. In California, the home improvement stores do not carry lead based solder, so I buy mine at a hobby shop. Although more expensive, the $8 roll that I have has lasted me about 2 years and I still have about a quarter of it left. Basically, the more lead the better melting there is

One thing I do when soldering deans is put the other end of the connecter in, sometimes when you solder the heat will melt the plastic housing and the metals tabs can shift out of place, having the other end connected will hold everything steady so your connecters will connect/disconnect as they should. Normally as long as the iron is hot enough and the solder melts fast you shouldn't have that problem but just in case.

Great tip! I have seen that done too. Now that I have the Trak Power Soldering Iron, I dont have to worry about melting any plastic anymore!

Had a go of doing it myself today, it sorta worked but i think my soldering iron wasnt hot enough to heat through the deans connector and the 12AWG wire im using. I got there in the end though

I take it I’m using the wrong type of solder, as it’s just falls off and won’t stick to anything, just rolls into a ball and goes where gravity takes it.
